How do I put stuff here? (Win XP question)

Shortcuts in that space between the start and that bracket thingy. I used it all the time on my old computer with windows 98. But I can't seem to figure out how to make shortcuts on my taskbar for XP.

(Dragging.. does nothing, nor does anything else I've tried.... I did manage to get something on the bar once, but It was all weird, and I didn't mean to do it.. so I would need help to do it again ^^)

I believe you right click, go up to toolbars, and then to quicklaunch.

Right Click on tool bar
Properties
Check box that says quicklaunch
Then just drag and drop.
