Well I just bought one sunday so I can't give to much info, but I got a Toshiba Progressive-Scan Digital Media Server (DVD Player/TiVo DVR Combo) and so far so good.

It has a 80gig hard drive, they say good for 80 hours but that's on low quility. turn it to good and it drops to 30 hours, best drops to 24 hrs, either way better then 6hr vhs.

Best part is it comes with free basic tivo. This gives you a three day tv guide instead of seven, (that's fine with me) plus you can program anything else like a vcr. Say you program something for next friday it will show up as manuel (sp) recording, but when the three day guide catches up it will tell you what your recording.

So far I love it, after reading the cnet reviews I have found I don't have all the probs people complain about.

we have directv and tivo, with the reciever and the dvr built into the same box. oh man, it rocks so freakin hard. with two units, we can record 4 things at once. it costs about 60 a month for basic plus directv and the tivo service, which you may want to consider. i strongly recommend. you will wonder how you ever watched tv without it.

I can't believe I went so long without one!

I have the series 2 40hour model, with regular cable. It's $12.95/month but I got the 3 month subscription. I was really tempted to get lifetime subscription, but someone told me a story of a guy who got lifetime and the TiVo box died 3 months into it and he couldn't get the money refunded.
The only issue I had with it at first is connecting to the TiVo service because of the whole phone line logistics. Also even though it says 40hour, that means 40hours of basic quality recording which isn't all that great. If you record at best quality you can save about 11 hours and some change of shows. Ever since I got TiVo I haven't missed a single one of my favorite shows. When you program it for season pass make sure you change the options to first run only or else it will record every re-run. Best part of all, is that I can fast forward through commercials(I think the replay system edits them out for you).
