What he said, there is a good 20+ servers on steam. And the protocol thing is a version issue.

            aghhh

so i finally get in and get to actually play, trying to get used to the controls n crap. Well it took about 4 minutes to load a map. It lagged and the guys talking were lagging. and my ping was like 275 and the highest the other had was like 150 and some had zero. is there somethign i can do to get less lag time? idk why it's doing this and i have dsl too.

I heard someone say that lag was dependant on where you were compared to where the server was being hosted, not your modem:o I'm not actually sure though.

Think of it like this... You're "ping" is how many milliseconds it takes for your "signal" to be sent to the server, and returned to you.

                The lower the better.

LAG normally occurs due to 2 things:
                - 1) Your connection is just a distance away from the server and its taking a while to get the signal up and back.

                - 2) Packet Loss: If your connection, or somewhere between your computer and the server connection, has a bad spot it can cause "packet loss" which will create lag because you're not sending/recieving the correct data since its got little gaps, this can also cause lag due to your computer getting various updates that aren't quite accurate, and same with the server.

If you have DSL go to http://www.dslreports.com and do a speed test from their tools section and get back here with the download/upload results and lets see what we can work with for you.
