my manager is a frigging tool

conversation between me and my boss, earlier this evening:

my manager (6:19:49 PM): how are ya
me (6:20:03 PM): eh, im alright
    me (6:20:05 PM): yourself?
my manager (6:20:25 PM): good just loggin in
my manager (6:20:57 PM): please work on assigned tickets , we need to get support under control
my manager (6:21:03 PM): around 10-15
me (6:21:17 PM): im trying to get noindoctrination moved off amos
me (6:21:20 PM): eric didnt do it
    my manager (6:21:29 PM): ok

now, a little background on this. i am more or less the unix administrator here, as there is nobody else here that can comprehend it. so, a problem arises thursday, I need to fix. As its perl related, im sort of clueless regarding it, as ive also never seen the error before. I consult others for help, no dice. cant get it done, ive exhausted myself on this, for going on 3 days now.

so, I also work in tech support. we have an online interface where customers can fill out support requests. there are about 30 in the inbox right now. he gets online and says the box needs to get down to 10-15. which, normally, wouldnt be a big deal, but, I had to move customers off the broken server..

whats even worse, this frigging tool, doesnt bother to login and do any work. all he has as management skill, is delegation. this guy, can delegate like nobodies business. he is so dumb, and cant solve problems you would learn day one here... and he has been here for 5 years. I really hate this guy. so much infact, that im just going to end this here.. and debate whether i should delete this thread later on tonight..

read this story about an outsourced(domestically) telephone tech support worker maybe it'll make you feel better. then again, maybe it won't...

We're not here to help fix your computer. We just want to get you off the phone. A tech-support slave tells his hellish tale.

the problem, long and short, im getting errors when running the 'make test' for the DBD::mysql perl module, version 2.9003. It yammers off the following error:

failed: Can't load '/var/install/DBD-mysql-2.9003/blib/arch/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so' for module DBD::mysql: File not found at /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.3/i386-bsdos/DynaLoader.pm line 229

i hate perl, mysql, cgi, and im starting to hate linux and unix more and more..

(im not expecting anyone to fix this problem. if you do, thanks to you for resolving a major pain in my balls, but, Im not actively trying to solicit anyones help here.. no need to burden any of you)

              wow.

I have read only the first page.. and I have to say, that Ken, Is me. seriously. I am good at what I do, there is no doubt about it. If there is a problem that needs to be fixed, I am usually very good about getting to the bottom of it, and getting it done. HOWEVER..

I am rude as hell about everything. I have been working at my job for 3.5 years now. You couldnt imagine the type of calls I take. short of using profanity with customers, I am rude as hell, i get right to the point, i dont pussyfoot around things. I challenge upper management on every decision they make that effects me/my department. and i still have a job here... I took a call the other day, went exactly like this, word for word:

me: thank you for calling media3, this is joe, how can i help you
lady: my internet is down, I cant get my email
me: your internet? as in you cant browse to ANY website on the internet?
              lady: yea
me: then you need to call your ISP, and explain to them your problem, not me

              **end conversation**

I really do not try to come across as rude, I really dont. I guess I am just such a cynic, that it comes out that way. but, when you work in a place where you are subjected to a barrage of stupidity, such as I am, you just start to respond in this manner. you would think that people would at least TRY to find the answer on their own.. but alas, such is not the case. The article started to talk about call times.. 12 minutes. resolve an issue in 12 minutes. try 5 minutes. my calltime, 5 minutes. that means, you have roughly 5 minutes to get on the phone with me, exlpain the problem, and allow me to fix it, without yapping in my ear. you cant do it, i make you fill out a tech support incident report. why you ask? because I dont need you on the phone, in my ear telling me how to do my job, or what I should do. If you want to jump in with solution ideas, maybe you should have fixed the problem on your own. remember, you called me for help, not the other way around.

and I can relate to the article in so many ways. yea, I do get you right off the phone, only because it may be hard enough for me to fix the issue to begin with, I dont want you on the other end telling me how to fix it, or passing me around the office to see if anyone else has any problems. im a technican, not your best friend.. I dont care. honest truth.

i guess it is really time for me to hit the job market. its rather difficult in my situation. I have alot of marketable skills (one of my best happens to be people skills/communication believe it or not.. i can be very easy to talk to when trying to resolve something.. though, sometimes, the attitude you project to me, i project to you) but, i have no college education. im self taught. I have been in the field of computers since the age of 12. you would have thought i would go to college. nah. landed this job while still in highschool.

[/whatever the hell i was talking about]

Umm... to me it looks like 'make test' is looking for the module, that 'make' its supposed to creat. I have no idea why, seems illogical to test something that isn't supposed to be there yet. Did you try 'make' or 'make install' yet? Does it compile without errors?

I know what you mean about users (lusers). I help the tech guy, Brian (smart guy, loves linux), at my school during a couple periods every day. Sometimes with the servers (most run debian). Usually just upgrades, or installing new programs to take over the M$ servers so we can trash them (ldap, samba, apache, mysql, etc.). But since our linux servers never/rarly (user error) ever go down, we deal mostly with clueless users and teachers.

                Example(s):
Brian: Go to room 140 (something like that), they can't print.
*I go and fix the printer*
                Brian: what was wrong?
                Me: printer was offline...

Stuff I've found in printers (not the paper tray, literaly inside):
                Paperclips
                Pencils
                Student id cards...

There are lots more, but I don't want write them down. I know how you feel joey d. I hate it how no one ever tries to figure stuff out on their onw.

yes, the make works fine, make install is useless to me, unless it passes the make test.

if it doesnt pass the series of tests it tries to do for the module, it may not perform right in the server environment.. broken module = pissed off people.

I feel your pain man...I used to work for an unnamed Pharmaceutical company in Cambridge and we had a boss that couldnt do anything but shovel the shizzle. I was working helpdesk/desktop support/rollouts/special projects (mostly Apple controlled sequencing machines). Gotta love IT managers...

Does it make mysql.so correctly? It might just be a broken scrip or something. If it made it, I'd just symlink it to '/var/install/DBD-mysql-2.9003/blib/arch/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so'. An extra symlink never hurt anyone .

I have you all beat when it comes down to stupid users. I deal with night auditors and the other brillian folks who deal with money for hotels and other retail orginazations.

All they have to do is make figure a match figure b.... sounds simple...oie.

I delt with one person at a Major Hotel Chain (Paris.....)who just discovered that they did not submit a 100,000+ dollar credit card batch .... and did not realize this for better than 13 months!! IDIOTS. Now they are upset that they havent got their money and want us to fix it. Yeah right.

Anyhow... on to your problem. Are you running 64 bit or 32 bit mysql and of course which version of perl are you trying to run with it. If you have a mismatch you will get this sort of err. Unfortunantly its sorta generic, so there are going to be a million and 5 different solutions. Good luck.

see there is a very simple explanation to all this....

its called an E.S.T.O. (pronounced S-Toe) these come up at my job all the time... it usally means if they dont have a stupid sign they should get one....
