Not sure if it counts but my father bought another house and was throwing out most of the garage contents. I scored the following:

60 Gallon 5hp Compressor from the 40s which will probably outlast most anything you buy now without spending 2k+
About 200 discs for the DA
    Other random sandpaper
    Air palm sander
    Grinding discs
The display case of brass brake fittings they have at an auto parts store
    Spark plug cleaner
Two things with both an air fitting and a power cord called metal sprayers that I have no idea what they are, possibly old powder coating guns
A whole bunch of fairly new spray paint
Lots of engine degreaser, brake clean, oil, antifreeze, etc
3 pairs of vice grips 2 or the two fork welding ones and a mini needle nose one
A whole bunch of metal for scrap
    Galvanized pipe threader
    Pile of assorted pullers
    Come-along
    Random lengths of chain
    Tire iron
    Portable air tank
Metal 5 gallon gas can for waste oil
Probably 5lbs of screws and nails

It's been awhile back, but on one of my best trips to the dump I scored: a highlift jack, needed some wd-40 and tlc, but works like new now; two bolt bins full of new bolts, must have been over $100 worth of them!; and some other small stuff which is escaping my mind at the moment.

Oh and I also found a nice 395/85/R20 Michelin XML military tire, looks like new! Now I just need 5 more for the 6x6.

I actually found one in that garage. The guy welded two highlift jacks together so he could pick it up about six feet. I called it the suicide jack and threw it in the scrap metal pile. He also had a bunch of other antique jacks that went in the scrap pile.

LOL you should have taken a pic of it and put it in the "most redneck" thread! I can't imagine picking up something that high with a hi-lift jack, hell they're unstable enough at their normal height! Hopefully he was using it to spread something apart like jacking trusses sideways to square them up etc. We actually did somethingsimiliar to that when building our shop, only we just welded a long pipe onto an old bumper jack.

I deemed it "scumbagging" a few years ago
Gas is expensive, no one drives around looking for stuff but every once in a while you luck out. 90% of what I find doesn't come from rich neighborhoods either. They don't typically own anything with motors on them, maybe you would occasionally get a TV or stereo or something from them though.

Saw a big pile of what looks like garbage at someones house today and he's got an engine block and tranny in it. I think I'm going to go knock on the door this weekend and inquire.

I've also been collecting whatever pieces of aluminum I see and air conditioners. Some decent money at the scrap yard.

Good luck finding anyone throwing away copper or brass now. I get copper from work sometimes when we make plumbing changes but not much.

I scored a leather couch and matching chair, 2 end tables, some lamps, and an entertainment center for my new apartment.

                            I love unclaimed evictions

Back when landlords had rights over their property.
Now a tenent basically has to be two months or more behind in rent to file for eviction. You have to hire a laywer and pay court or other legal fees. This process takes a month if you're lucky, if the tenent is smart they can drag it out three or four months. So you may well loose six months in rent and pay a couple thousand dollars in legal fees before you can legally evict someone. Then they can destroy the apartment out of spite and the police will not arrest them for vandalism. It is considered a civil matter. Suing them is useless because if they weren't paying rent they have no money to take.
Once you do get them out you can no-longer put their belongings out at the street. You must pay movers to put their items into storage which you are responsible for paying for for I believe three months.
Meanwhile any action you as a landlord take such as changing locks, removing their belongings, or even intentionally being a nuicense to them can bring about civil and criminal charges.

                              End rant:
                              Nice find.
