I like OSX, but I call this article simply mac propoganda.
It fails to present percentages or the install base of OSX for servers. -
That report lost all credibility with the first sentence, when it mentions the "experts" at mi2g.
Here's just one example of mi2g's other brilliant reports: Did you know the world ended on January 1, 2000 from the Y2K debacle? Oh wait, scratch that, we meant January 1, 2001. Er, no. Sorry ... false alarm.
See:
or did you know that:
Hackers caused the Columbia shuttle disaster by hacking into NASA computers 7 hours before re-entry?
Or how about the "fact" that devastation from hacker attacks in 2004 will be of cataclysmic proportions greater than the WTC disaster of 9/11?
Did you know Al'Qaeda cyber-terrorist forces are funneling money from your bank account? Do they run PayPal?
DK Matai is a for-hire shill and an idiot. If you need his firm's research for vindication on your OS choice, more power to you.
The study referenced in the Mac article did not take into account Malware. So let's put this into perspective: Open source software (Linux, Apache, Sendmail) runs about 70% of servers world-wide, Microsoft less than 20%. In a comparison of systems directly and deliberately hacked, Linux would have more compromises, hands-down. I don't dispute that. However, what happens to those numbers when we factor in MS.Blaster alone?
Oh, it might also be prudent to mention that mi2g is also accutely aware of the "massive problems with Linux security," given that they are entering the Linux security software market with CD-ROM distributed placebos.
Goto Google and do a search for "mi2g controversy." You should find a few hundred matches.Last edited by Dryden; 04-05-2004, 09:34 AM.Comment

Dude,
You have to remember, Mac took a *BASE* Unix platform (NOT LINUX) . FreeBSD to be exact, one of the most secure unix systems ever produced (if properly maintained). Apple added proprietary code that nobody else can touch. So it's Apples fault, not BSD or the Unix world's fault.
Secondly, Unix packages are maintained by a large, LARGE volume of people. Where as microsoft's code is all in-house qc'd. While all the packages that get put into a FreeBSD system are QC'd too, that doesn't mean some toolbox wont find a buffer overlow or stack hack for the code. Again, there's not just 15 guys maintaining the code (or however many.. the number is irrelivent).
So, you're comparing two in-house operations (windows vs OSX). Apple took it upon themselves to make Darwin mostly proprietary, it's their duty to fix the problems, not the package maintainers (if they use OpenSource Packages at all). (Not to mention a VASTLY smaller group of developers to fix the flaws).Comment

Aha, right. Linux owns Windoze.
How many virus infested linux computers/servers have you seen? Compare that to the Windows computers/server.... Notice something?
Its true, in general FreeBSD is more secure than most flavors of Linux, but not when your comparing two well configured and secured servers. The day that Windows becomes more stable and faster than Linux, I'll "eat my shorts". But if you put up a RedHat webserver with its default configs (any version), I'd bet that it will get rooted in a month or two.. Comment

My new dual 1.8 G5 will rape your doze box any day. And I mean rape it HARD.
But seriously, judging simply by virii/spyware/adware/all the other things that makes any flavor of 'doze horrible, OSX rules. I have been running it since the betas, and while there HAVE been major problems, nothing close to the day to day probs that 'doze boxes experience. Apparently MS thinks that poor QC = more cash in their pocket. I call that a poor business philosophy.Red/Black Freeflow Lotus Racegun

Security is a big issue really but its mostly driven by the motives that drive the creators of these things. And no one really seems hot to write things for Linux or Mac OS. They take too much time and affect too few to warrant their time and attention. But no one ever said anything about security flaws being better of one over the other did they? At least I have never heard that direct relationship touted as a benefit. Its just a result of the rarity that they are not targetted or affected by Virus's. Not that they could not be. But they are just likely NOT to be targeted. So therefore remain immune through "Neglect" so to speak. Now I do often hear that said that if you want to not be bothered wit Virus's then get a Mac or run Linux. But its a stretch to assume they mean they are immune. They are not. They just don't get em because no one writes em. Anyway if they did say that then they shouldn't have.... because no ones really doing very much about it in any programs for ANY OS...
This is an interesting read by the way...

Well my non-biased view at www.intel.com says you're wrong. But then again so does www.amd.com saying they are faster.Originally posted by swanster
