Electronics knowledge needed--modifying ps2 controller.

I want to switch a couple of the buttons on a game controller.

They are attached directly to the board in the controller though.

So I was thinking I could maybe cut and strip the wires in the cord and just swap them; however, I know it isn't that simple since there are like 25 functions on the controller and only 7 different terminals in the plug.

Is there some way to do this in hardware, or am I screwed?

If I had the propper schematics and wiring diagrams, I could probably do it.

I just want to make it like button '&' and button '$' are switched.

Like if the game had customizable controls, I could just switch them. But it doesn't so I wanted to do it in the hardware. Show the computer what's up, make it THINK it was making ME conform. well...


Why do game developers ever NOT have customizable controls anyway? Why not? why?

It'd be easy on a PS1 controller, but PS2 buttons are pressure-sensative, meaning I wouldn't risk modifying a working $35 controller.

well it is for a ps game, and I have lots of old ps controllers I was going to experiment on, so if you would elaborate on how it'd be esay I'd appreciate it.

i've seen ps controllers hooked up to switches and bags

Don't think you can do it through the cord.You'd have to cut and re-lace the board traces coming from the switches.I can't say how hard that is witout opening one up and looking but suffice it to say it will take advanced solder,SMD and micro jumping ability.
