    Sony being tricky with PS2s???

Ok i realized this before. Sony may be alot smarter than i think. They don't charge for online, unlike xbox. But there is something depper than this. Have you guys noticed all the ps2's are starting to crap out? Alot of ps2's i've seen have been crapping out that have not been turned into to be fixed. Mine crapped out, 2 of my friends are, and 1 of my friend's sent his in before. Now think about it, sony says they are coming out with the ps3 within the next 2 yearsish(2005-06) So they are doing 2 things here. Making you wait for ps3 without dropping cash for a new ps2.So there will be a demand for them off the bat. Or you either buy a new ps2 dropping 180 on a new systme that you already have and then possibly buying a ps3.
    Sony is damn tricky.

My brothers PS2 is going strong, and I think he got it the year it came out. Where as his XBOX broke 3 weeks ago, after having it 1.5 years. Which he is not getting a replacement for it. The dvd drive broke, and since it's proprietary the drives are 130ish (on eBay anyway).

I bought my PS2 the month they became available, and it's still working. However, the DVD player is beginning to flutter quite a bit, and dual-layer DVDs all have begun to lock-up the player at the layer change.

From my reading, the PS2 will fail sooner if used to watch DVD movies. I don't have any evidence of this, nor can think of any technical reason why this would occur, but my experiences and the failure of my friends' PS2 last year seems to confirm it.

I got mine the month it came out also and cn say its been worked through its paces pretty darn good. Ive played at least 200 hundred movies thru it, countless games, Ive dropped it, sat on it, dropped stuff on it, its scratched up all to hell and its still rocking strong.

I got mine the day they arrived at the game store and have not had one problem with it. Hundreds of DVDs, and twice as many games later, it's still fine. I even spilled chocolate milk on it.

Maybe they made the first one to be better so that when people talked about how there newer ones kept breaking down the guys with old ones would be there to say nope my old one never had a flaw.

I would have to guess by crapping out, you are getting "disc read errors"

                solves that.

If just the dvd drive is broken I'd be interested in buying it off him for cheap. Let me know.

As an aside I'm on my 1st PS2 and but have had to recalibrate it a couple times and fix some minor things. Xbox has given me no problems to this point.

                      PS2

We use a lot of PS2s at work and they go flaky after about 8 months. It's a pain in the butt, because they always try to blame my dept when the builds don't work. 8 months is average because we leave them ON for weeks/months at a time. That's also without using them to play movies...it shouldn't matter wether it's playing a movie or a game, it's just data.

It really depends on how you keep them...if you have it sitting on a carpet, block the air vents, let your cat lay on it, leave them ON for extended periods of time... then you'll have more problems.

Keep them clean and cold and you'll have less problems. Blow some compressed air through the front vents every once in a while, then turn them ON (to blow the dust out). Turn them OFF when you aren't playing (obvious but it still needs to be said to some people). Don't use those lens cleaning CDs, it might knock the lens out of alignment and if you don't touch the lens then it's useless anyways.

I've had my personal once since they were released and it's still going strong.

I've know about this for a while. There was ven a class action lawsuit against Sony over it IIRC. Try googling on it.

Mine doesn't read DVDs hardly anymore. All my friends have broke, just like reading disc stuff like that.

my ps2 is going strong and I got it the 2nd week of release. My dvd is also starting to go bad, but once it does, i'm just going to figure out a way to swap it out.

My little sisters homeschool and watch HOURS of dvds EVERY SCHOOL DAY (I hate to think of the hours ) and it works fine. I've had it for 2 years. But yeah I've heard a lot of storys about them DREing and breaking. You spend your money and you take your chances.
