Im not so sure its intentional. I just think its coincidental that playing it backwards sounds like that.

If you listen to the 2 wav files that i made (i sang the song into a mic, recorded using windows sound recorder, and then reversed it) it sounds eerily similar. so, it does not appear that this was purposely done for the song, the words backwards just sound like that.

Think about it like this.
Forward the song is about the Stairway to Heaven.It only makes since from an editing point of view to have it be the opposite of that when played backwards.Actually quite genius if you think about it.

HOLY CRAP. i just heard it now while reading the lyrics(backwards version) and it is word for word. THAT is some scary stuff. i knew jimmy page would have had to make a pact with the devil in order to be the guitar god he is.

That has been around since the song came out. I remember in HS in the 80's people talking about that...it is pretty much a fable. There was no intentional backwards masking at all...Led Zeppelin was actually shocked that people would even try to play their album backwards.

heres something for those of you with nothing to do can try..

try recording yourself saying/singing the lyrics as they sound backwards, then reverse it in windows sound recorder.. see if they sound the same as they would forward.

im going to try this for my own amusement when i get home.
