Computer problem :(

Ok, so the jist of it is somehow or another, my Mobo, Power Supply & Video Card all got fried..If it was lightning, then I must have missed somthing because there wasn't any rain at all

Regardless, I've got new mobo in (ASUS A7N8X ), power supply replaced and an old Geforce MX 400 (until I get my Radeon back from ATI)..Bios starts fine, but Windows goes blue screen on my before I even get to XP's login screen.

I was told by my local computer store that happened to my laptop when it was being repaired from gatorade spilling in it. They said they fixed it by double checking eveything was connected correctly and something with the software. hope i helped even a little

Maybe a virus? Open her up in safe-mode and see what happens.

If your new motherboard has a different chipset than the original, then Windows 2000 or XP (which from the looks of it, you have one of these two) is what you have, will of course throw a fit. Generally, you cannot just change chipsets like this.

You could try a "repair" installation. Basically you boot from your cd and tell it to repair a Windows 2000 or XP installation. This will TEND to keep your current config, and fix the driver/chipset problems, BUT there are of course no guarantees this will work.

Now, Windows 98 on the other hand you could have booted in safe mode, removed all the devices in the device manager and had it redetect everything, but that doesn't seem like what you are running - given the problems you are having.

Usually when you make a drastic hardware change such as that you also will need to reformat.

Ok, so I kinda figured the reformat bit out on my own (said fark it, was due for one anyways..well, 2 technically, but whatever)..so yeah, she's up & running now, which is quite the relief but I've got a couple more questions, preference things really..

1. How do I force a drive letter switch?

2. Since I couldn't get into windows whatsoever, I installed it on both HD's so I could pick & choose what I wanted to save..atm, I've got two installs of XP, the plan is to reformat my 20gig HD & run it as slave. Problem is, even w/ both installs intact & working perfectly fine, I can't get my primary HD to run as master, both via jumpers & cable select...Hope that makes sense to ya'll

Well since I've gotten no help on that question, I've got something a bit more immediate to worry about..

I've got what I can only surmise is a virus of some sorts, although how is beyond me considering the only files I kept were pictures I took myself as well as some general files from trusted sites.

Both regedit & msconfig open, but close promptly after that.

It appears that said virus has disabled MS Auto-update. I downloaded SP1 & tried to install, and the bloody thing won't install for the life of me. I've tried Nortons 2K2, McCafee & PC-Cillan & only nortons will install (other 2 require SP1) but it closes just like regedit & msconfig

I've reformatted 2x on each HD over the last 4 days, I'm growing tired of this crap. Any ideas?

Problem solved..turned out to be a mean little virus by the name of Gaobot..Dunno where I got the thing, but all is good now..thanks for the help guys
