    Windows error message decyphering

Is there are website out there that I can plug in this cryptic Windows message and have it explained?

About 6 times a day I get the blue screen of death and this

    0e:019f:bff8e64b

After that I need to do a physical shut down because Windows has jammed.

What the heck is going on!

(Compaq 1.2 ghz Athlon, 512 ram, 40MB HD, ATI 9600 128mb vid card, Win ME, cable modem)

    Nuff said!

Hehe..okay okay. Lemme be a little bit more helpful. Make sure all your drivers are up to date. Also, sometimes, some of the computers here at work slows down and crashes when applications don't shut down completely taking up CPU cycles. Check your task manager to see if there are any processes that's taking up all the resources, etc.

oh no someone stole your megahurtz!

this is a total cop out reply...but you should really think about switching to win2000/xp and give WinMe the boot. (and the finger)

I've asked basically this same question before, and then too it was recommended I move to XP.

Why? How will another M$ OS solve this problem?

Drivers: They all are as up to date as I can figure out.

besause WinME is the worst os EVER. It was just an intermediate os, the only real new feature you couldn't get for 98 SE was Sys. Restore.

Just buy(or be like me and download) Win2K or XP.

            I'm a Mac guy.

Yet I also own two Windoze comps. ME is a complete joke. Utter garbage, just ask anyone. Sadly when I purchased it I was fooled into thinking it was the equivalent of Win2000, just under a different name. Lies! All lies!

My suggestion(take w/ a grain of salt) is do a CLEAN install:

            http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm <<<-- Go here first.

            Good luck! :)

              Are the OEM versions ok?

              Edit: Ok, new error
              "iexplore
iexplore caused a stack fault in module user.exe at 0007:00006cd3"

              Getting very tired of this.

Any other suggestions than moving to XP?

you really should think about movin to XP, you then download all the critical updates and service packs, but in either case use http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and download the freeware version of ad-aware and check see if you got any nasty stuff on there, delete whatever it finds. Then get http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php if you haven't a good virus scanner, and keep the nastys out. Its all free.

check the heat sync is still in place.

check see if your fan/s are working

                defrag and disk cleanup

                reinstall your os?

other than that i dunno. XP has its own firewall also.

                good luck

go to the Microsoft Knowledge base and type in the error. This will help you for sure.

Yeah, OEM is fine, but depending on the store, they might make you buy like a fan or somethign with it to make the licence valid.

I did a quick search and almost every hit I got for the bff8e64b part of that error mentioned Windows ME and video drivers. But those folk might have been guessing.

Since your card came out after Win ME was released (and bascially abandoned) that might relate to the problem.

What are you running when you bluescreen?

As for XP, it's solid. I use XP Pro so maybe I have a more robust experience ... but from what I understand XP Home is still built on the NT 5.0 kernal (same as Win 2000 Pro), which was MS's first actually stable OS since DOS. Your machine can definitely handle it since the machine I built for my in-laws is an Athalon 2100 with 512MB RAM and a whimpy little GeForce4?0 PCI video card with 64MB video RAM.

Yuck. Does this happen when you hit a specific site?
One thing to try is deleting all of your plugins
                        In IE 6.0 it's tools->internet options->settings->view objects
Then delete everything in there. You'll just have to re-download some of those objects when you go back to the site's you got them from.

Spyware is also a possible culprit. I spent three hours last weekend trying to find the adware that embedded itself into my in-law's machine. It would launch IE on it's own but sometimes also crash it. It turned out it was purityscan, which my mother-in-law downloaded to _prevent_ porn from getting on her machine (which it doesn't actually do anyway).

                          Windows ME = Mainly Errors

Go with XP. OEM is fine but you can only install it on one system. Usually OEM is suppose to be sold with HW but some websites sell them without HW. Like this site.

I know it's not Spyware. I use SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

The only hint I've found so far is something like AMD, Win ME and ATI don't mix. Something like that.
