I did a search, could not find anything, so here goes...
Has any of the metal heads here heard the new SlipKnoT? If you havent, then dont! I have no idea what in Gods name they were thinking when making this "music". Well, I take that back, musically its good, the usual Joey "blast" beats followed with a drawn out heavy(I use this term lightly) guitar, contained unmelodically with the bantering of percussion instruments and somewhat well placed samples. all of this which makes up the usual neo-metal style the band has come to define, but the real kicker here is Taylor's vocal work...
ITS TERRIBLE!!!
I dont really get what he was trying to do with these couple songs("Pulse of the Maggots", "Duality") I have heard. He has completely ridded his voice of any edge that it had before. It seems as if he wanted to bring the backporch crap that is Stone Sour to a respectable act such as SlipKnoT. I mean the fast talking moan does get a tad old and his once ballsy scream is now unexistent, hes trying to tone down to appeal to a larger audience, but that theory is up for discussion. Its turning into radio rock mall-core and Im not a fan of it one bit.
But its not ALL bad. The DJ and the sampler seem to have found a solid cohesion and thier now tight-knit sound is above average. The guitar work, though still sounding like one guitarist even though they have 2, is still somewhat top notch for thier niche of music. The drums are still a huge stand out, Joey's work here is all aces, but what did you expect here. SlipKnoT's albums have gone on another downgrade. Traces of this type of music are found throughout IOWA, and barely anywhere on thier self-titled release (yes I know its alot of numbers, I dont feel like typing them out).
I will admit though, I have ONLY heard two songs, and if thats a precursor for whats to come, you wont see me lining up at my local record store to purchase it release day. Though, I love the guys, these few songs are seeming to be a huge disappointment, one I did not expect given the amount of the time the group had to work on there new stuff.
So, in conclusion, the two tracks I heard were less than pleasing but still attract me to listen, but not respectfully. Any and all connotations of the old band are now almost extinct and it seems that another group of musicians has fallen victim to trend. Can ya really blame 'em?
