I dont want to say price isnt an option...... I will be building another XPC, so heat may/maynot be a factor. I have never had an intell chipset before so..... plus I think intels run alittle cooler.

          or does it really matter?

If your going to be doing a lot of video editing, then go with the P4. Otherwise I would definately get the 64 just because there better than intel at almost everything else.

Check out this artice from tomshardware to see how much better the Athlon 64 is http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040419/index.html. Look how the Athlon 64 clocked at 2.9 GHZ beats out a P4 EE clocked at 4 GHZ!! Tell me which ones better at gaming

All the benchmarks I've ever seen show the 64s scoring higher in games but lower in video editing and such. AMDs are notorious for running hot, but if you have a good heatsink, it's a moot point. AMDs are also a whole hell of a lot cheaper.

AMD is like a british sports car. Its fast, agile, and hardly ever works right. It is not a processor for anyone but a professional builder with some nice testing and cooling equipment. I have seen two melt before my eyes (not my own). There are no second chances.

A p4 is more like a muscle car, its not as fast in the turns, but you can fill the radiator with muddy water and the tank with crappy gas and it runs just fine. All you need to fix it are the basics.

Of course, at this point your video card is your determining factor. Processors now days run fast enough to crunch anything thrown at them. You can't buy a game, and not many apps, today that will bog down any current processor.

Wait for the next round of stuff from Intel near the end of the summer. PCI Express and Intels next range of motherboards are going to be SO worth the wait. You will kick yourself if you upgrade to an expensive system now.

Rooster: You do realize the new AMD CPUs have thermal protection now dont you?

I work for a computer store and we have never had a problem with AMD CPUs

The FX-53 is the fastest for gaming right now. When XP-64 becomes available, it'll get abouut 20% faster.

Smart man. Although keep in mind, the next round of graphics cards will be PCI Express based as well. mmmmm bigger pipelines.....

Dell has a really really good LCD monitor. I forget the model # but it has gotten rave reviews for the price. I'll try to find it and post a link here.

                              just an FYI

We use Intel based machines to make the games...generally there are less problems with them on the testing side so I'd go with that.

But definitely go with a nice video card. Best thing you can get when you're talking about game performance.
