I have never heard of anything like that before. Just remember to pack light. You probably need half the stuff you brought and double the stuff you forgot. Thats just the way it works. Have fun.
It came to a point in my life when it was either pay the rent or buy paintball gear. I think I made the wise choice. If anyoneone needs me I'm livin in a van down by the river.

We had a class at my school that was called Outdoor Adventure Sports.
It was pretty sweet we did a bunch of stuff, mountain biking, rapelling(sp?)
archery, etc. The best part was at the end of the year there was a 2-3 day camping trip. We went down to the Colorado river mmmmm, i think it was somewhere near Austin. Anyways, it was pretty awesome, basically it was one big camping trip with all your friends. We canoed and hiked and just screwed around.

            Thats pretty cool man.
If you have any questions about packing, you can ask me if you want..
You really dont need to have anything in your pack besides clothes, sleeping bag, tent, food, water, a spoon, a bowl, and like a flashlight. (and TP, lets not forget about the good ol' TP)
NOO you dont need to bring the portable tv.

That is pretty cool. I joined the boy scouts so that I could go camping more. After three years and only 3 camping trips I quit. Backpacking is something I really enjoy. As a few people pointed out...PACK LIGHT! For a day hike, carry as much water as you can. Hydro packs are great for day hikes. Carry some light easy to eat food. Stuff with salt in it is good as it will make you want to drink water, which you need to do often. Make sure someone carries a small first aid kit...you only need one for the group. And the three most important things to carry... Compass, knife and lighter (or water proof matches). For your longer hikes, remember that you can be carrying up to 50lbs of gear. Make sure you can physically do this before you head out. nothing like only getting a few miles into a 4 day hike and realizing there is no way you'll make it.

For college orientation I went backpacking with 9 other freshmen... it was cool, but it was the week before school started, we didn't miss anything but the pre-college/end of summer parties...

good times though, we spent 3 days packing along the south coast of lake superior...

Backpacking is one of the most enjoyable adventures in life. Enjoy it!! Since nobody else said it already: make sure you break in your new boots before backpacking for the first time!!! Wear 'em around the house and everwhere you go for a couple days, even a week when you first get 'em. Worst thing you can do to your feet is backpacking in shiny new boots. Well, other than maybe not wearing 2 pairs of socks... oh god I feel a huge lecture coming on, I could talk for hours about this, better go before I hurt myself.
