Sound is a type of energy. Energy cannot be created or detroyed, only changed from one form to the other. (First Law of Thermodynamics) The kinetic energy of the tree hitting the ground transfered into sound (some of it). That sound is a physical type of energy and therefore it does exist even if no one heard it. Eventually it will convert back into other forms of energy, because sound is a temporary energy source (actually, all energy is temporary... light energy is converted to chemical energy which is then broken down and used, eventually reaching the lowest form of energy... Second Law of Thermodynamics).
