    TROY (The official AO Thread)

    Thoughts on Troy?
I think orlando had a crappy part to play that didnt show him off like he should have been.

Anyone notice the greek king, Agamemnon, was the chief of the highway patrollmen from Super Troopers?

Anyway. it was a pretty good movie!

When Paris (orlando bloom) picked up the bow, I turned to my friends and said, "I think he's being type-cast." :P

Over all I thought it was a good movie. Having read the Illiad, I can say that they touched on some of the best parts for making a movie about it. I missed seeing some of the other heroes from the original but that could have made it a bit more confusing. But at least they had Odysseus.

The only thing that stuck out to me, was the performance of both kings. Priam's just seemed labored, and Agamemnon's seemed like he was channeling Stryker from X2, but that could just be the way those actor's do it.

Th battles were beautiful. I love the style they gave to Achilles, like a wild cat on the hunt. The fight between Hector and Achilles was especially good.

Achilles, on the whole, impressed me. Brad Pitt, in my opinion, did an excellent job of portraying him; and I really did like the personality they gave him, as far as glory and immortality goes.

Helen fell short of my expectations, but she was destined to, simply because its impossible to cast someone that will be, to everyone, the "most beautiful woman ever born." So I can only say that her looks fell short, but the performance was good enough.

How can I close this post without talking about the horse. It was beautiful. There's something about how it wasn't clean cut that made it more so. The wood was gathered from destroyed ships and it had a dark forboding beauty to it.

it was good. it was very good. but it was NOT awesome.

brad pitt kinda sucked because they didnt make him gritty at all. honestly, he is supposed to be the greatest warrior ever, he shouldnt care about keeping clean shaven the whole time for an 8 year war. that just bugged me. he was better in fight club.

      orlando bloom was a pussy.

      eric bana friggin rocked.

the guy with the hammer was super awesome.

Reading the books so long ago, I want to know about Achilles and Hector.
So in the movie after Hector was defeated, did Achilles drag his body behind his horse around Troy for days? Homer has to be the first writer to have one of the main antagonists get totally owned.

i enjoyed the movie, but its not gladiator so if you havent seen it yet dont set your sights that high. for as much background info as the movie gives you they sure seem to skip over how long the war really was. for someone who didnt know any better you might think the war lasted all of two weeks.

as long as you are expecting to see a movie with a fairly high action level then you will prolly enjoy troy. its not as bloody as gladiator, they wanted to avoid the R rating im assuming, but as action flicks go you could do worse.

as far as the broad that played helen, maybe not the hottest chick ever but i know i would!

Haven't seen it yet...will see it tonight. But remember that Achilles was kind of a mommas boy and a narcissist (in the Iliad). His mother was a sea nymph (Thetis) who babied him.

The reason that the Iliad stood the test of time as a legend is because the characters have flaws. Achilles loses his best friend because of his own ego and self love. Agamemnon put his own needs and desires above the good to the Greek army (the book opens with a dispute between him and Achilles). And Hector and Priam are good and honorable men (family men really) who are caught and destroyed by circumstances beyond their control.

So to say, "Why wasn't Brad Pitt more gritty?" and "Why was Orlando Bloom such a pussy?" Is basically saying, "Why didn't the director throw out the whole story and made Fight Club with armor and spears?"

                  my review...

For people who havent seen it yet, rest assured theres a lot of butt shots of a really hot blonde. Unfortunately that hot blonde is Brad Pitt.

Hopefully those that have been through the American school system, your teachers might have mentioned "The Illiad" or you might have even read a comic book "The Illiad: Batman vs. Achillies" by Frank Miller, or maybe you just sprained your "Achillies tendon" while playing Dance Dance Revolution, either way you should be familiar with the story. If thats not the case heres a brief story line:

A young prince of Troy steals the wife of the King of Sparta, and the two young lovers take off back to Troy. So needless to say this pisses off the King of Sparta so he asks his big brother ,the King of the Rest of the Greek World, for some help getting back his wife. So they devise a plan to tell the rest of the Greeks that Troy has been building "IAC's" (Implements of Abundant Carnage), and that if they dont attack them now, then one day Troy might very well use thier IACs on the Greeks. The Greek King even tells his people that the King of Troy was trying to buy yellowcake from the Hittites, and was trying to procure some aluminum tubes. (I dont think i got to tell you wtf someone can do with an aluminum tube!) So hearing this info the Greeks all jump aboard on the idea, and set sail for Troy to do some big battles for the joy of moviegoers and CG engineers everywhere! Oh yeah and theres this Achilles guy who has an affinity for wearing skirts and killing people.

Overall Impression: As people have stated before this is a good movie, but its not "awesome". The battles are well done, the dialogue is ok, but I didnt care much for the character development. I didnt feel much for the characters or thier relationships with each other. Except for Hector, he was the only character I liked and cared about.....and for the fact everytime someone said "Hector!", i kept thinking...."i didnt know there were mexicans in ancient greece!"

Favorite part of the movie: When the King of Troy learns of all the Greek men coming to his shores he announces hes gonna need a large pack of Trojans. (at which point everyone in the kings court giggles)

Least Favorite Part: The multitude of half naked Brad Pitt shots, and the absent shots of greek slave girl boobies! Bah! But admittedly if you were serving life in prison for murder, than you would want someone like Brad Pitt as your cell mate.

                  Random Thoughts:
Is it me or did this movie make it seem like the entire Trojan War was fought like in the span of 2 weeks??
Not only is Orlando Bloom being type cast as an archer..i also think hes getting typecast as a little beeitch...i.e. this movie and Pirates of the Carribean.
The Horse statue gift that they leave on the beach...doesnt that kind of remind you of malicious computer programs people try to email you with?? hmmmm...bet you never thought about that.....am I blowing your mind???

Overall a good movie, it was worth the price of admission. But Im a picky DVD buyer and I dont think it will be sitting next to my other DVDs, such as Braveheart, Gladiator or Dirty Debutantes #32.

                  :)

They should make a sequal... maybe called "The Odyssey" Odysseus was not a key player in the movie, nor was Ajax... and what about the other heros?

if they would have included every single hero that was in the illiad we would have been there 5 hours just to explain who and why they were there.

The movie rocked. achillise (AKA ALeetise) was a total bad-as*, like taking the beach with only him and his crew, cutting off the statue of the god's head, taking out the huge guy with 1 hit (his power-move) defeating hector, and ripping thru every1. too bad pansy as* paris had to arrow him to death . achillise/hector fight was so undescribably ownage. chicks were hot, horse was perfect, fire-ball strategy was elite, and so much more.

Decent flick, but a bit dissapointing. Also doens't follow Homer epic very well.

On a slightly humorous note: Does anyone find it amusing that the French capitol was named after the wussy brother?
