    Computer: WinME won't boot

    I'd like to give it the boot..............

    Ok, working on my in-laws computer (HP Celeron, ME,....). It had a ton of spyware and viruses. Somewhere along the way something got screwed up.

    Now it won't boot, to ME or even in Safe mode. I get this,

    ---------------------------

    the following file is missing or corrupted: c:\windows\ifshlp.sys
    the following file is missing or corrupted: c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

    type the name of he windows loader (e.g., c;windows/ststem/vmmx32.vxd)

    -----------------------------------

    I'm stumped. I have a boot disk for the computer..... It's about 1 yr old, but I can even get that to do anything. I've checked the disk and there are files on there.

      Wipe it and install XP or 98SE. WinME is the WORST OS M$ ever put out.

              you got the ME virus. It's made by microsoft and is undetecatble by norton or any of the other leading brands of virus scanners. It's most likley already spread throughout your whole system so the only thing you can really do is load linux. Red hat should do nicely. After that I recommend giving 1-800-aplesux a call and tell the ppl there about how much you hate them for giving you a virus.

                  Edweird, is there really an XP Patch or are you just saying you should install XP over it. I've got a few systems running ME now and they really suck so I'm interested in this as well.

                          im on ME right now and its fine after a fresh reinstall a while ago. i got that error when srarting up a lot back in the day, i just kept trying and it loaded

                              back up all your important data..err...your pornies too i guess
                              then install some other OS other than ME

                                  I am still running ME, I keep threatening to do the XP upgrade, but lately it has been running fine. I do occasionally have to run the scanreg /restore utility when it won't connect to the internet, but since I installed a firewall and leave my connection active, that problem has all but gone away. I do agree, however, that ME is the absolute worst OS microsoft ever cursed a computer with.

                                      Me is about as stable as Nitroglyceron in a blender.
                                      I had one on an old pos celly 600 with an I810 mobo that was prone to acting like, well......ME.
