    Troy was a good movie!

    Well, despite my hesitation in watching Troy, I finally broke down and went to it with a friend of mine. I wasn't expecting much. After disliking Gladiator, and being a general non-fan of large self-proclaimed epic scale movies, I was expecting the "same old, same old" extremely violent, no plot, bad acting schtick. Well, I am glad to say that I was wrong.

    Now, it certainly wasn't the type of movie that touches you deep-down, or moves you in any significant way; however, it was a "timeless" tale told very well. In fact, I dare assert that the actual conveyance of the plot was excellent. Characters...actually seemed like people I'd care about. I was happy that Achilles (Brad Pitt) was a multi-faceted character, and his transitions were believable.

    The battles were decent - I'm more interested in characters and their emotional journeys. The fight scene between Hector and Achilles was phenomenal! I was quite literally clenched on the edge of my seat, cringing at each blow!

    I must say that the women were absolutely beautifully done. I bring this up because it has become a recent trend to unveil women for no conceivable reason. Troy did not do this. There were quite a few scenes where nudity was hinted; however, I was happy to see that director WolfGang Peterson thought with his head, not his unit when making this film.

    Okay...I'm tired of typing. I'll wrap it up.
    * = Terrible
    ***** = Phenomenal!

    Plot = *** 1/2
    The story was nothing new, though there were a few small twists and turns. I won't give anything away, though.
    Dialogue = ***
    It wasn't lacking, but I wasn't excited or terribly impressed by the dialogue.
    Cinematography ****
    Very well done, the cinematography conveyed the arid taste of Troy. Battle scenes were intense, and romantic scenes were intimate.
    Acting **** 1/2
    Brad Pitt and Eric were great as usual. Orlando Bloom was okay. Diane Kruger, Julie Christie and Rose Byrne were all amazing. Sean Bean was great.
    Overall *** 1/2
    Worth seeing for sure. Don't expect a life-changing experience. Attend it for the story, and you'll be pleased.

      I thought that it was an excelent movie also, well worth the money (I got in early for 5 bucks). I too thought it would suck, but it turned out to be pretty good. Also helped me understand the story a little more.

        i thought it was pretty good as well, but a few people die who arent supposed to, or ways they arent supposed to. wasnt achilles supposed to drag hectors body around the city and then paris shoots him with a poison arrow? and doesnt agamemnon die when he comes back home to his wife who finds out shes been cheating on him? i didnt think menelaos was supposed to die either that way. odysseus was a huge character in the book, now hes got a side role. all that ranting aside, the movie was pretty entertaining (good battle scenes/acting)

          I hated it.

          For one, there was WAY To much touchy feely crap. I was expecting something much more violent and macho.

          However, perhaps the worst part was the tie-dye hippy trash with the trojans. They may as well have shot feathers and threw pillows at them. Ridiculous. Hector totally should have went to fight for the Greek... after killing there king because he was a choad.

          Moving on, we had perhaps the most annoying aspect... they had Brad Pitt all glammed up like he was about to go model. I mean, cmon, for a fierce warrior he looked way to pretty. Gah.

          I still cant believe that the trojans fell for the ole' soldiers-in-the-wooden-horse gag. Unbelievable.

          So, with those problems aside, it could have been cool. If only the Trojans king wasnt a freaking moron.

          Yes, I know, it wasn't "original," but they should have changed it all anyways.

            Squid, I think that you're insulting the STORY rather than the movie...But I do agree that the whole Brad Pitt gleaming with body oils was bs.

              Well, a little of both. Story aside, They could have done WITHOUT all the freaking brad pitt nakedness, pretty boy crap.

              They could have also done something about those stupid tie-dye robes...

              Hector was the only manly Trojan in the whole freaking movie.

                i thought it was a good movie overall. i agree with most of what tyrion said. the women were beautiful yet tastefully depicted.

                brad pitt was a little overdone but, afterall, he's not an ugly dude. they made him look good yet badass at the same time. so that wasn't that bad

                everyone has seen braveheart, gladiator, and a little different but similar- saving private ryan, etc. these films were excellently produced and brialliantly acted. troy faltered in some of the acting, but some actors did a very good job.

                lastly, other movies like gladiator and braveheart don't try to make the fight scenes or some of the personal conflicts between characters too "macho" or badass. they just come out that way and come out excellent.

                i thought this movie made it way too noticeable that they tried to make the characters look so "badass" in some of the arguments and some of the fight scenes. although the fight scene between eric bana and brad pitt was unbelievably well done and lived up to and surpassed my expectations for it. I was afraid that they were going to ruin it like some newer movies tend to do, but it was awesome.

                overall, the movie was pretty good.
