If it only happened once, I wouldnt be worried. Could be a multitude of things and if it hasnt happened again I'd just forget about it. The whirring is almost certainly a fan going bad, see if you can identify which one and replace it. Make sure it isnt your CPU fan.

Its really hard to give a deffinate diagnosises online, however my thoughts are as follows:

Your getting a random worring, this is most likely your fans, or one of them anyway...

Your system has powered down atleast once...

Your running a fast system thats generateing quite a bit of heat...

How many Fans do you have going, is one considered a backup fan?

Certian fans, depending on configuration, can be tripped and turned on once a heat sensor is tripped, causeing a fan thats not ushally on, to come on, some fans are louder then others, this leads me to belive thats whats happening with the random wurring...

its eather that or you might have a CD in a drive that it keeps trying to read? If sounds like a jets trying to take off in your box, this is most likely the case...

Sensors, well, most BIOSs have a sensor that if it gets to a certian tempature, it will kill the machine to prevent damage(such as melting of components, etc)

My suggestion would to take your case apart, completely clean out your case of dust, plug it in with the side pannels of or what not and make sure everythings spinning properly, and all fans are plugged in properly, etc..

when you boot, drop into your BIOS(generally hitting the Del key in the first stage of boot will do this) and goto something resembleing PC Health, it should have Fan 1, Fan 2, ETC, Backup Fan or something of the sort and be displaying what RPM there running and all that good stuff, make sure for every fan in your case if allouted in the bios settings, that there are no fans running below 1k RPM, as well as shutdown temp and a few other things in drop down menus... check the shut down temp, make sure its not disabled, keep it on the highest setting as long as you dont have any old hardwear in there that might deside to melt easier then some of the newer stuff designed to run around the higher output temps

tell me what you get from all this...

as for the error, after the random shut down, when you reboot, does it run really slow till the error pops up? This is most likely just a result of the arbatrary shutdown when data was being written, wouldnt worry so much about it...honestly

my compy doesn't run that hot, just like 87 Fahrenheit...

i'm more or less computer savvy, so i understood all that and did it all already, but thanks for the help. although, i found no reason to take the computer apart, because i'm not running real hot, and the whirring has gone away it would seem...
