    CAR HELP: 99' Cougar

    I admit right off the back... I'm Cougar retarded. In the past 6yrs i've only had to replace 2 thermostats. 1 on a Fiero (yes, a POS but really easy to replace) and 1 on a Chevy S-10.

    Well now my Cougar (99' manual tran) is overheating about 30 seconds after turning on the car. If I hit the road it actually gets hotter faster so its appearing to me the thermostat is messed. I picked up a new one, but the local store was out of the "how to" style books for the 99'+ cougars so I have no way and I need to replace it ASAP.

    If someone knows where to get a how to guide online, or something, that'd be awsome. I'd just wait til tomorrow and take the gf's car to another Autozone/Checker, but it needs to be fixed tonight.

              It's a blown head gasket, trust me.... Been there, and I had the exact same problems....


              It might cost a pretty penny to have fixed, the engine needs to be disassembled... sorry to give you bad news, but that's probably what's wrong.

                  Couldn't it just be the solenoid for the thermostat as well? I know in older, less computer controlled cars the thermo was a mechanical operation but in my 98 Dodge Caravan it's driven by a solenoid. Something my temp guage will spike and then it'll just drop.

                  I've neer had the pleasure of working on a Cougar of any year so I may be out in left field here.

                      Its most likely the thermostat... i'm replacing it tomorrow, i just dont have the right size wrench to get the housing apart today.

                          Solonoid, for a thermostat? Whats the world coming to
                          Just follow the upper radiator hose to where it goes into the intake manifold, and there is your thermostat. Unbolt the old on, bolt in a new one, done

                              I found it. Its just in a PAIN spot. I have to remove like 3 hoses cause they're in the way, and some other crap (battery, etc) but its no biggie. Hoses just need to be clamped on.
