As long as you can tell what someone is saying... it doesn't matter.
What do you think about guys that crack on spelling?

Wow, this thread went on for like half a day w/o any posts, I just turned my back on it. Anyway I'm 16... I dunno what that has to do with anything... I really hope nothing.Just out of curiosity's sake, how old are you '1ofkind'?
About the topic, I don't need that bull...cow thrown in my face, its a mistake get over it. Maybe that should be a new forum rule, no cracking on spelling! Sometimes there are some interisting topics and its like some bunhole start another topic on someones typo. Anyway I just wanted to crack on the "spelling nazis" and make them think twice, like is it really worth it.
Don't get me wrong sometimes theres a interisting word common people cant spell, and for some odd reason a particular person knows how to spell it. After he shows us were all like, oohhh thanks.

To me it's more than this Jim. I can forgive the occasional spelling error. It's bound to happen. What really sets me off is this new fad of "internet typing".Originally posted by Pyrate Jim"I only yell because I care"
To some of us, trying to decipher posts that lack even rudimentary punctuation, spelling and grammar is extremely annoying.
In fact, I considered it an insult to my intelligence that I have to wade through a lot of the lazy posts I find on some boards.
But I don't normally behave like some "grammar nazi" and start correcting people. That's not my job.
My job is to make sure that my offspring are better than that. They know the value of communication and that your success in life often depends on how you present yourself to others.
It's a consolation to me to know that the people who can't even put together a post with correct english are the ones who will ultimately be working for my children.
So you go ahead and spell as you like. I won't say a thing.
Instead of typing in "Are you okay?" it is perverted to "RUOK".
Laoughing Out Loud has become LOL and sometime I do use that instead of typing out the whole thing but now it's actually left the keys and has become a new phrase in the lexicon. I actually heard some one say "lol" during a conversation they were having with their friends. It almost made me puke.
The reason this sets me off is because so few people, or at least few of the people I talk to, realize that we think the way we speak and if we talk and type lazy then we start to think lazy.Return to the free market. I don't usually mind typos or spelling errors if they actually don't know how to spell the word, but when people start typing "r" "u" "2" etc. instead of words is when I start to get annoyed. Alot of times, if people type like that I don't take them as seriousley as I would someone who uses proper grammar or I'll just skip reading it.
I like the way heat put it:
"seriously though spelling is important, it's just not big enough of an issue to cause trouble over... On the other had if you're gonna reside in the continental US

Did I lose some time here?Originally posted by 1ofkindWow, this thread went on for like half a day w/o any posts, I just turned my back on it.
By the thread times, it looked to me like it went 92 minutes before the first post, and it's been almost 26 hours since the topic was begun.
Hasty8:
What "sets me off" is that it's disrespectful to talk baby talk to an adult. Either you are a literate mature person with all the rights and responsibilities thereof, or you're too lazy to even try to get out of the gutter.
"Oh, I don't have to do that! I don't care if I don't type well as long as you understand it"
That's lazy. That's a lack of respect for yourself, others and the language in general.
Like I said, somebody wants to be a lazy fool, then go right ahead. I'm not going to get all batrachomyomachian about it. It won't be me suffering because nobody will hire an idiot who can't spell.CT Co-ordinator, Paintball MarshalsComment

Whilst I agree that LOL used in real life is rather sad, to use shortcuts for phrases is ok online some posts would be ridiculously long so there is nothing wrong in using such short cuts such as LOL, ROLFLMAO, BTW or IIRC or even AFAIK...but only if used in context...some you can't use fully spelled such as RTFMOriginally posted by Hasty8To me it's more than this Jim. The reason this sets me off is because so few people, or at least few of the people I talk to, realize that we think the way we speak and if we talk and type lazy then we start to think lazy.
it is the shortcuts that are wrong such as l33t spelling that grate with me...I probably got that spelling wrong but then as it is mainly 12 yr olds trying to look big would I really wish to talk along with them? Pure bad spelling and grammar like Phil's post (although obviously his post is being sarcastic) are the ones that I will not read...it has to make some sense and if after several reads it still doesn't make sense then that is the point at which I have to decide if I want to be bothered to reply or ask the question of "please translate this post so I can answer you". Stupidity is not a geographical thing it transcends all borders, even this thread title needs two reads to decide what is being actually asked. It has two translations ...
1: Does it say what do we think about people that complain about bad spelling, or
2: Should we have a blitz on bad spelling in posts...
Well thats' how I read it...either works and both versions have been answered in this thread but...one of the translations I have just made is wrong...but which one?
*edit* Just noticed the Poll options...even that is wrong on both options

I understand the occasional "typo" and don't have a problem with that. I'm guilty of it myself at times. Do I think it's "cool" to pick on people and make fun of them for spelling errors? No. But I have no problem asking someone to learn basic English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling before they try to "make themselves sound smart." Nothing cracks me up more than reading somebody try and debate an issue and attempt to sound like they know what they're talking about, and yet have absolutely no grasp of the English language. To me, you automatically lose credibility and I'm less likely to take you seriously. *shrugs* Just my own thoughts.Comment

Dude if I saw "barrel sieze" I'd think you spelled "seize" wrong, and I'd figure you somehow got your barrel stuck in your gun.
I hate when I spell words wrong myself, which isn't all that often but it still annoys me. I don't mind occassional mispellings, especially if Im talking to someone on AIM or something. I'd rather people used "you" and "your" instead of "u" and "ur" but I can live with it. When I'm telling a story and trying to type a lot quickly, you'll see a few tehs and whatnot, it happens.
I can live with little stuff, I'm not going to correct someone who says "your" when they should have said "you're", but when you get the word so abysmally wrong that you have to reread the sentence to check for context because the so-called word makes absolutely not sense, then I'm going to correct you. Deal with it. Basic spelling is something you learn in GRAMMAR SCHOOL. Its a fundamental skill. I don't care if you can't spell disestablishmentarianism but spelling size should not be much of a challenge.

I'll write something about bad spelling/grammer pretty much for only two reasons.
1) Just to give a little ribbing to someone in fun
2) When someone rants on or posts complete nonsence to the point that you wonder if they have some sort of blackmale hanging over the head of the nut-case teachers who keep letting them advance in school.
Of course my spelling sucks so I expect a bit of ribbing myself and if I'm typing a long post I'll do it in word then cut and paste it over here."Relax. Don't worry. Have a Home Brew."

Hmm lets handle it this was, is it nessacery to harass someone for every spelling error? I'ed like to anser my own question.
No it is not, its rude and unnecessary. Why go threw the trouble to reply, you spelled it wrong its it.

I like when people are corrected if their spelling really reaches a certain level of retardation...
It happens alot with our younger members, especially when they get worked up over something and attempt to "put the smack down" in a post but end up sounding like illiterate jo-jo tards
I misspell too but I often open up a second window on my desktop to check the spelling of words that look real wrong to me, especially when I'm trying to make a point in a given post. But I dont sweat the occasionals.Comment
