Yay! The Pledge of Allegiance survives!!

Score one for the good guys!!!

The Pledge survives as is. The overbearing father without custody had no right to use his daughter to advance his own politics!

Supreme court threw him out on his rump!

Yeah they threw him out, but that means that they didn't discuss it either. It's still open to be attacked since there is no official ruling as of yet.

        Boo!!!

The Pledge of Allegiance was fine the way it was originally written in 1892.

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'" -Francis Bellamy, 1892

3 of the justices who voted to throw it out on the grounds it was contstitutional. Add Scalia in who recused himself and you have a great shot of knocking it out!

hey man...thats how he wrote it. they added the United States of America part in the 20's.

Maybe he planned for it to be generic so he could license it out to other countries.

I have no objection to the additions to the pledge. They help define it as our nation actually WAS and IS.

And that is all I will say about it.

Honestly I don't care whether or not the pledge includes under God or not.

Hey maybe he was Smart Parts before they were!

Let's see if I license the pledge to xx countries at x $ per pledge! Wow I would be rich!

Same here. Honestly, I don't have a problem with saying it, but if they removed it I wouldn't care either ("Under God" has only been around since the 1950's anyway. It's not like we'd be loosing an incredibly important/symbolic line).

It also doesn't bother me in the least.

However the only defense I have ever heard is along the lines of "They help define it as our nation actually WAS and IS." (not picking on shartley, I've heard it repeatedly)

I question how long your nostalgia would last if Congress changed the flag to have a black man lynched in the middle (no reference to South Park intended). Some may immediately state their support because hatred and exploitation of minorities did help define how our nation as it was and is.

In any case, the Supreme Court says it isn't a violation of the First Amendment. That's fine with me.

It sounds like a violation of the first amendment to me.

Oh well, I don't care much.

The real question is "Why was it added?"

It was added to appease Joseph Mcarthy. Is that the statement we want to make about our country?

What if a moslem child says "under Allah"? A Moslem-American is, after all, part of how this country IS today.

No, the Supreme court said that the guy didn't have any standing to take it to court. We talked about this in both my Poly Sci classes today.

Now I believe that the phrase "under God" won't be taken out because IIRC while the pledge may be recited as a class, it is not manditory.

I reserve my right to be wrong.
