Simple, move to Canada...it's still legal to download for personal use here, it's just illegal to distribute.

i dont see myself as stealing music, i see music sharing as a way for people to sample music, for instance

i was never an mxpx fan before i found them on kazaa, i downloaded alot of their music. like it

then i bough a cd by them for 20 at hottopic [bad idea hot topic blows]
then i go to a concert another 20 a ticket
      while at the concert i buy a 15 t-shirt and a 10 cd

so, kazaa has brought them 55 dollars just from me.

If you get the song in it's entireity from someone other then the producer or one of their authorised agents (such as in the form of a radio station giveaway) and you didn't pay for it then that, according to current laws is stealing.

Whether it gets you more involved in that particular group is inconsequential.

I've done the same thing. Bought an entire cd based on a single song that I downloaded but technically it is stealing.

The fact that I got burned by the rest of the crap songs on that cd is another matter altogether.
Return to the free market. Get rid of all government regulations and let society make it's own decisions. Time and again the relaxing of government regulations has increased profits, innovation and the economy.

There's this new Russian mp3 site, http://allofmp3.com/, that is legal in Russia(not quite sure about over here in the us though) and it's only 1 penny per mb. I havn't used it myself(I'm still using IRC and DC) but I saw a thing on The Screen Savers about it and they said it was legit and worked good, but they advised using paypal or something similar to pay for it. Andother good thing is that they offer lossless formats like FLAC and Monkey's Audio.

Well there is truth to what Hasty says about RIAA. If you download something that is not free you are technically stealing. HOwever also under the law, to the best of my knowledge, it is not agianst the law to make distribute and download file sharing software. The software itself is perfectly legal un til is becomes a tool for illegal condct(stealing).

This Mp3 stuff seems to me to be very similar to the Rom/Emulator stuff. For those who dont know Emulators are programs that mimic video game consoles and play Roms which are copies of the game for that respective console.

The laws rearding Roms, last i checked, are like this. You may not own a Rom of a game if you do not legally own a physical copy of the game. However, you may download the rom for 24 hours after which you must remove it from your computer. the later part of that law may be gone because its been some time since i checked.

I think this law would be pretty legit for MP3s. The question lies actually with the physical purchase. Are you purchasing rights to the song itself or just a copy of the song.

I dont really care. I dont download music since i dont listen to much current music and I have CDs for the bands I allready like.

Check TechTV and search for filesharing/MP3. There is one site that you can download for pennies. Yes, I did say pennies. Problem is, the site is based in Russia. They have a different set of laws in which they do pay the bands but no royalties to the corporates.

Edit: DOH!!!! Just saw WickeDKlown's post.

The whole thing with the RIAA is that they just charge too damn much. The amount of music that I've 'aquired' would equal up to a lot of money cd wise. Another thing is that I cannot find the cd's that I listen to ANYWHERE except for a few online stores, and then the price issue comes up again. Maybe if a CD was $5 for a PHYSICAL copy (not an online copy) then I'd buy it. Half of the songs that I have only get listened to once and then get burried deep inside my PC. Sorry, I'm not paying for something I'll listen to once. Maybe I'd consider it if teh bands got a larger cut and the music industry wasn't monopolized, but until then, Kazaa Lite Tools++ is working pretty damn good.

Zeropaid.com has some good information about file sharing and a bunch of downloads of P2P programs. Remember, the programs are legal, but what you do with them isn't necessiarly legal.

Hmm... I was wondering, is it legal to copy say a friend's CD? Not to upload to the internet and for mass sharing, but like if my friend copied a CD and gave it to me? Is all that legal? I was under the impression that that was, but mass sharing was not. Just wondering.

Yeah, my brother got a letter from our ISP when he downloaded a game on Kazaa (some crappy one he used at a lan party we had) and said he had to remove it or they could revoke our ISP service... so ofcourse he took it off but the only reason it was there was because he downloaded it...

So yeah, buy things if you can, sample music if you want, but don't be like some people and not pay for ANYTHING
