rtguy - scenarios sound like fun haha, so are 9mm lugers ammo? cus i searched for it, it came up a bunch of ammo, i thought it was a gun... so technically all glocks are the same?

steelrat - what is this about "automatic" and "semiautomatic" and this double action, etc etc, all these terms. Sigs are good too? ill look into those. how do i know which models are good for sigs?

yeah lets cover handguns before we go into rifles and shotguns, since handguns sound much more convenient

I do know the AO sig rules, I just want a free sig pic, that's all!

9mm luger is the type of cartridge the gun fires. so it is the type of ammo the gun shoots.
Glocks are built the same, it is like cockers or mags, you can get a bunch of diff. bells and whistles. like sights(both iron and optic), trigger pull weight as steel rat mentioned, the caliber of the ammo the gun shoots. things like that.....

i can also answer some of the questions you asked steel rat if he doesnt reply. just e-mail me. im still trying to find that site for you.

im still confused like crazy, but everyone should be confused at first, with all them crazy terms, "double action" (that sounds like crazy stuff)

so glocks are like... umm TIMMYS, they re all the same, all reliable, just with different junk? same goes with sigs?

So is he going to be in a home defense situation or combat? You got big problems if your facing mulitple armed attackers wearing body armour. I do agree for home defence nothing beats the intimidation or utility of a shotgun. Not only will it work for home defence it can be used in many sporting situtions.

http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg00-e.htm good sight for info on guns.
              www.gunbroker.com
http://www.idpa.com/ go to continue, the scenarios are under "contributed coarses of fire" also has good info.

yes in a sense glocks are like timmys. some have long barrels, some have stupid muzzle proting(which is no good, if your caught in a night fight for your life the flash up will rid you of your vision for a couple seconds.) if you asking if SIG pistols are good from what i hear and have seen yes, but i have no experience w/ them. the first link in this post should help w/ the double and single action confusion.

Go to all the gun shops in the area (real gun shops, not that Big 5 crap), and tell them exactly what you told us. If you have any police friends, ask them too.

thanks everyone, especially rtguy and steelrat

any gun store that is specialized in guns are good right? big 5's haha
so far i have narrowed my choices to glocks and sigs, ill pay more attention to those, and try to learn as much as possible bout them. are they economy guns? cause i dont wanna be paying like 1g for a handgun. since we might get 2 and a shotgun or so.

because firearms (handguns especially) have a singular purpose, to kill people. So logically it should be called a weapon, because thats what it is. e.g. Why are hammers called hammers? Cant you also use other tools to hammer something?

Anyways..I love my .45. But as has been stated earlier its not the best idea for an inexperienced shooter. Still think for home defense..bad guy coming through the window type scenario....a .357 Mag or Shotgun is the best.

For handguns its really hard to beat the reliability and simpicity of a revolver. A Ruger or some of the Smith and Wessons can be had for much less than a SIG. And even with a double action semiauto you still have to remember to pull the slide back to put the gun into battery unless you store it with a round in the chamber. A simple 357 revolver will have the ability to shoot 38 specials that are cheap and easy to learn with. Then you can step up to hotter loads as your skills progress. My advice with a Glock is shoot one before you buy one as I cannot stand the safety on them it makes the trigger pull really goofy. Its purely a preference thing though.

The recoil on a 45 can be harsh. If you start somebody on one and they start flinching cause they are afraid of the recoil its a habit that is near impossible to break.

nonsense..a friend of mine at the gun club has a .50 BE, i belive it is the BE, it is the pistol any how.....i really enjoy shooting it. it does have more kick than a .45 but nothing to be afraid of...... but as the lower caliber being easier to shoot, i have seen a 9 yr old. first time ever shooting a gun, shoot a .44 special double action revolver w/o any problems. ill admit to it he shot it just as good if not better than i shot. but that is also an option for you as previously stated by....Sinister, you can buy both single and double action revolvers in just about every caliber you can buy a semi auto in. plus some. i dont think i hvae seen a semi auto that shot a .45 LC(Long Colt) but i have seen many revolvers that do.....

Sinister you are right about that.....i must say, but some people will shoot better w/ a higher caliber to start. i know i did. I did forget about people being afraid of it.....it is kinda un-natural for something in you hand to be making something explode and send a projectile down range at close to 1000fps.
