a .223 is a fine gun for shooting animals.
what ever gun you chose for home defense is up to you, but might i suggest a laser pointing sight, it will certinally scare the crap out of somone because they know you have a gun and they know where its aimed.

True the ammo is kind of pricey but not that bad. Plus it's for home defense so he can get the new revolver in the .17 cal, it would be a little harder to defend your home from an intruder that's already inside if you have a .223 rifle.

.17 of an inch is a very very small peice of lead to stop somebody with.

The .17 HMR is really suited to varmit shooting. its much too small for anything else it use 20gr bullets a 22lr uses 32-36gr bullets. Yes I know we're comparing muzzle velocitys of 1660fps vs. 2500. I can only assume that data is out of a rifle or test barrel so a 6in barreled revolver is going to have a drop in that number. I have no direct expierence with the with the .17HMR I did however at one time own a rifle in .17 Remington. It launched a 25 gr bullet at 4000fps. Still it was good really for varmits only. I had way too many coyotes run off after being shot and if you ever want a work out try and chase a wounded coyote whose got a 200 yard head start across lava beds. The small bullets were prone to shattering and penetrating to the vitals. While the 17 is very accurate its not very flexible. I will agree the mild report and recoil will make for a good beginners gun. But not a practicle one. There arent alot of people who have hands steady enough to shoot rockchucks at 150 yards with a revolver. As far as home defence goes any gun is better than no gun. But 20grs@2500 fps give you about 245 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Same as alot of the 38 special +p loads and at home defence ranges the better bullet shape of the .17 doesnt really come into play.

True, but I feel that even though it is a small bullet if it did penetrate someone they would stop whatever they are doing if it didn't kill them. The bullet being so light is where all of that muzzle velocity comes from.

then go buy one of those .22 caliber pellet guns.

you could penetrate people with a .177 pellet gun
.177 is worthless for anything bigger than a house cat.
