There'll be a link below the "Search Mail" button and to the right of the "Create a Filter" link that says something like "Invite a friend to Gmail!" It'll just appear one day. When you click it, it'll tell you how many invitations you have, and provide instructions on how to send one.

Google's servers index your messages, yes. Along with allowing for full-text searching of your entire e-mail box, this process generates a list of keywords on which the side text ads are based.

Google does not modify the contents of the e-mail, and there is no point in the process at which another human could read your e-mail.
Go ahead and be ignorant but I saw a whole special on Television about this new G-Mail. A human can and will read your emails and add ads to them. They are also talking about how this could be illegal in california because of some laws against such a practice, especially because the person sending the emails to you has no idea that they are being read. All i am trying to tell you guys is be careful.

Ok, so I should coordinate my monthly terrorist meetings with a different mail service then? Thanks for the info...

Seriously though, 90% of the mail I recieve now are just things from AO or other forums saying a reply has been posted. And the mail I actually care about, I don't think anybody else would.

I may be wrong, but I think that google is using a similar ad system as what the freeware version of Opera is. It just uses some text recognition software combined with Google's search engine to provide text ads that aren't even contained within the email. The ads are off to the side.

I would never send confidential information via email. Very few, if any, email is secure. I honestly don't think that Gmail is any more unsecure than any other email client.

I'd try, but you seem to have the market cornered.

Again, this simply isn't true; just because you saw it on TV doesn't make it so. Read Google's description of the process.. What you've described is not what they're doing. In fact, the process you've described would be perhaps the most inefficient way of inserting advertising possible.
