    Harley riding over the "Dragon"

I am headed up to Helen,GA for the weekend for a rally with some friends. Really more of a homegrown rally .....

An old freind and I were talking about riding in the mountains this weekend. He mentioned it to his dad and a few friends and next thing you know we reserved a whole floor of a motel. Funny how these things progress.

We will be meeting up in Helen friday night and partying into the wee hours of the morning. As soon as the aspirin take effect Sat. morning we are heading out to ride the Dragon into Tenn.

Any AO 2wheelers out there are heartily invited to come and put your constitution to the test. We will be easy to find snuggled up to the bar Friday night raising hell. See yall in the wind!

Dam.... thats not far from me. I might just show up. What hotel and what time you leaving out from there for the ride?

And whats the distance of the ride? Problem would be getting back to SC after that...

We don't really have an itnerary so far as I know. I will post up the name of the place tomorrow evening before I leave. All I was told was "within stumbling distance of the biggest bar in Helen...."

The ride will start in Helen and go to Deals Gap and back. This will be my first trip there , so I don't know the mileage. I am thinking something around 6 hour round trip. I may be wrong.

I will get some actual details tonight/tomorrow and let you know if you , or others are interested.

            Ok....

Mapquest says that the ride from Helen,GA to Topton,NC is right under 70 miles.

From Topton , to the turnaround point on US 129 is just about 90 miles.

Allowing for stops , gas and whatnot ..... I figure on a good day of riding. We are all on cruisers and a few (myself included) will have the spouse onboard also. We will be taking it slow and easy with many recreational stops.

Lucky dawg! My Sporty runs off reserve at about 115 , and you BETTER be near a gas station at that point.....

Dam and I thought my was small! What that the 883? Prolly about the same size tank but I just get a bit better mileage on the 650 single thumper. Mine is I think 2.8 gallons total and about 2.4 to reserve. But them hills might even down that a bit.

I love that place up in Georgia. Even though during tourist season it's swamped worse than it is down here. You guys should go down the river in the innertubes. It's a blast! My grandmother owned a house about 30 minutes away so we went up there ALLL the time. Have fun. The ride into Tennessee should be fun.

so how did the ride go?

I stuck around town as you know. Flooding rains the night before skeered me off from a long ride. I not certain how bad it was up that way but it at was gawd awful around here Friday night and it came up from down that way. lasted into early Saturday morning. I did do a local ride Saturday. About 50 or so miles round trip. Ran into lots of places where sand and gravel washed into the roads. Something I feared would be an issue so I was watching for it.

Saw reports Saturday night of three Motorcyle accidents Saturday. Two fatalities one broken hand. One was on the Blue Ridge around Asheville. He was wearing a helmet but suffered severe body tauma. Seems he slid and hit a curb. I wonder if washed over gravel may have contributed. The broken hand guy was a tangle with a car. And the other fatality I got no details on.

Gotta be carefull out there. Little stuff can kill ya...

We ended up not going all the way up to Deals Gap , due to the very same weather.

Saturday's ride was spectacular. Definatly one of those rides that make you glad to be alive. We rode up around Lake Burton , went to Brasstown Bald , and Anna Ruby Falls.

Due to the extent of my partying Sat night I was in no condition to ride today. I started to , but felt dizzy and nausea , so I went back to the hotel and packed up.I will catch hell from the fella for that one. I suppose I will have to wear the butterbean badge for a while till someone else takes honors.

We went through some weather Friday night that made me wonder if the roads would still be there in the morning.....There was a great deal of "FOD" washed onto the roads saturday.

Would have loved to see you there. We are planning our next outing to Panama City or the Gold Coast in early fall. Maybe I will know soon enough that you can join us? I ride in N GA quite often also , so I will drop you a PM next time and maybe we can hook up and ride.
