I want to build a gaming computer and need some help...

Well, I am into video games in a fairly large way and I just got a job (woot!). Now I am looking into building a good gaming computer.

I have been told that Vicious PC makes nice systems but I was wondering what AO thought. I am a complete newb in this area (well, sort of).

I am mainly looking to build a computer that will run Doom 3 and Half Life 2 smoothly. I have somewhat of a budget (around 1k) so that kind of limits things but please lmk what you guys reccomend as a good system. BTW, the 1k does not have to include a monitor or speakers, But it would be nice to have those.

PS: Which would be better b/w the Athlon 64 or the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition?

    Thanks Guys,
    -Patrick

i just built me a new gaming pc recently and love it... and trust me its not as hard as you think...

the whole system costed me around $1000 and its a hell of a lot faster than any dell or gateway for that price...

    what i got...
    First International Company motherboard AU13
    1gigabyte ram
AMD Athlon 2700+ Processor (I perfer this or similar for a gaming computer its run great for me so far and it beats my old intel)
    nvidia geforce fx 5200
    seagate 80 GB hard drive
    antec 430 watt power supply
    cdrw dvd rom combo drive
antec lanboy case (looks great) comes with two 120mm fans front lights up blue
    sound blaster llive 5.1
    floopy disk drive

All this costed me around $1000
id use your old keyboard mouse and screen if your screen isnt to outdated... if it is you video card will be wasted because your screen can produce that

building your own pc isnt hard as people think everything just goes into one spot and for the prices you pay for everything it is a hell of a lot cheaper building it yourself then buying for a vendor + its fun to build it... just read the manuals if you get stuck anywhere.

    hope this helps ya
