sister locked in holding cell in british airport :(:(

ok, so here's the story. my sister met a guy online and he came over from britain last summer and they spent the summer together. then, he had to go back to britain as his stay here was about to expire. so after suffering for the better part of a year of not seeing eachother, they decided that they'd get married in britain, so he can come and stay as an american citizen permanently. so they planned this for EVER, and she left yesterday for the 9pm flight to britain.

upon arriving at the airport, she was declared a security risk and pulled aside for interrogation. why was she declared a security risk? because she had a one-way ticket, and only one bag (she packed everything into a carry-on bag).

so they finally let her onto the plane at 9pm, and they let her fly all the way over to britain. then, when she tried to leave, she was denied access to britain. why? they say it's because she needs to have a visa, not just a passport. yet nobody informed her of this in america? yet it was never found in all of her vast amounts of research online? what the HELL is up with this?

oh i almost forgot, after being denied access, she was AGAIN interrogated and now put in a holding cell. they took all of her stuff, save a jacket and her money. she's locked in, and she was only allowed one phone call. her fiance arrived at the airport and was not allowed to even see her!

i'm incredibly disappointed and upset in the eficacy of our and britain's governments in fighting terrorism, when my frigging 21 year old albino-looking sister is LOCKED UP LIKE A PRISONER because she is an efficient packer, and doesn't know when she's returning to the states. infuriated is perhaps a better word.

It's probably because she only has a one way ticket, so they think she's there to stay.

I'm sorry for the situation that your sister is in but your argument that she is "albino white" and therfore couldn't be a terrorist is ABSURD. Have you heard of a few places called Bosnia, Serbia, Albania and Chechnya (sp)? All of these countries have large muslim factions. Now the majority of these are not fanatical (ie terrorists) but there is the distinct possibility that they could be. This is part of our problems as Americans we have such a narrow view of what our "enemies" should look like.

I'm not trying to chastise you but rather illustrate a broader piont. I appoligize for the slight threadjacking. I wish your sister the best and as was said earlier contact the American Consulate and this issue will get resolved post haste (hopefully).

An update to be fair...
As a tourist/visitor from america you DO NOT need a visa (I was thinking about the visa waiver forms you fill out) BUT this only applies if you satisfy the Immigration Rules....

and you need to fill out this form http://www.fco.gov.uk/Files/kfile/VAF2_2003_Eng,0.pdf
Further information is here ...

Ok, I have already done this for someone else as I said above but to get the information all I did was type "home office website uk" into the google search and all the info was on the third link given under the heading
UK Visas Home
UKvisas is a joint Home Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office unit which ... This
website will tell you if you need a visa to visit the UK and, if so ...

The information isn't hidden nor difficult to find. I did this all in the last 5 min's or if you want to be totally accurate since I last posted but then I have been doing other things.

Bwahahahahahaha!!!

That's pretty funny. She is an efficient packer, but a poor planner!

Well they will release her. Not like they are gonna send her to Guantanamo or anything!

thanks for the info guys (markM especially). i did my research on this after i posted and found out most of this stuff. they ended up letting her into the country after lots of talking with my parents and her fiance's parents.

and chairman- sorry, apparently i didn't illustrate my cynicism enough. if you've ever read any of my political threads on this forum, you'll know that i really don't think the only "enemies" are arabs. i was being sarcastic in a state of rage lol. sorry for the misunderstanding but the fact is that there IS racial profiling in the world, and arabs ARE profiled (which i dislike immensely, but does not change that it is a fact). so i was pointing out that she wasn't just merely being profiled. of course there's terrorism in other places, but really, middle easterners are the largest victims of racial profiling. we can all agree on that, i'm sure.

edit- and perhaps the thing that angers me most about the whole situation was that they charged her credit card without her permission to get her a return ticket back to the states when they decided she had to go back. ridiculous. oh well, it's all over now.

that's pretty weird and unfortunate, too bad for her. I hope everything works out.

And Mark is right about not needing a Visa to enter. I flew to the UK with my wife on our honeymoon last year and we didn't need visas, just passports.

(I got to play paintball ins cottland too )
Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger

Like I said I wasn't trying to single you out or bring the flame thrower it's just an issue that has bothered me for sometime. I do a fair amount of traveling and the you see drop on the TSA screeners because they have to open their bags is rediculous. It makes me . Becasue anyone could be trying to whatever would help them achieve their goals. Anywho I'm starting to rant again.

Glad to hear your sis is free and I hope she has a long happy marriage

impostal22....middle easterners are the largest victims of racial profiling. we can all agree on that, i'm sure.

I suspect Black people might just disagree with that.... Perhaps they are the newest but not certain that counts as "largest".

Actually, not really. Travel has always required a minimum of planning. Nearly ALL countries have always required that travellers have a return ticket on them. If you don't know when, you have to buy an open ended one (often mucho bucks). This is to prove to the authorities that if you become broke and destitute, you can at least drag your sorry behind back home and not become a burden to the host country.

Anybody who thinks you can just show up in a country with no tangible proof you're prepared/capable to leave AND is admitting to getting married is either ignorant, nieve, or stupid.

Once married, it's not going to be easy for the sister to either stay in Britain or the husband to go to the US. Either country will require paperwork and back ground information and will have complex immigration procedures to follow.
