    Lasik Eye Surgery?

I was wondering if any body would recommend this. im 15 and i wear contacts, my eyes to me i think are horrible, i just got them rechecked november and when i was at the docters a month ago or so she said i already have to stand at 20 feet to see where other people can see at 50 feet. i really think i will be blind by at least 30. i don't know why my eyes are so bad? i play video games, go on the computer but not much at other people where they are on like every freaking second. i was thinking some time down the road do you think lasik would be a good idea?

also sometimes when i run i hear/feel a click like behind my eye...do you think that has something to do with my bad vision or could it be worse? does that happen to anyone?

i havent gotten it yet because it is expensive(and your insurance does not cover it).

    a few things for you

    a) you are 15. Your eyes have not stopped changing yet so noone will perform a lasik on you

    b) you are 15, most doctors reccommend waiting till 21

    c) your eyes are not that bad...mine are worse and i have astygmatism.

That clicking you hear is probably the gears engaging in your mind...your Mom forgot to tell you you are a robot and your eyesight (or sensory unit)is probably due to faulty software or a low battery.

there probably isnt ont thing that makes your eyesight worse. Its usually genetic. I guess just chill untill your eyes stop changing so fast. i mean, yeah its annoying, but contacts arnt that bad, huh?

          Some things to think about-

I recently talked to a very trusted buddy of mine who was thinking about having Laser (Lasik, same thing?) surgery...

He told me 2 things that would weigh very heavily on your decision:

Laser eye surgery destroys your night vision-meaning, in the dark, your blind, forever.

Laser eye surgery corrects the problem for about 10 years, but then it just comes back.

This is what he told me. I'm not eye doctor, but I trust what he says and I believe he checked things out.

I just had mine done a year ago and it was the best! You will have to wait though..I think 21 is the earliest you can get it. But that all depends on if your eyes have stabilized. If your prescription keeps changing drastically every year then you'll have to wait till it slows.

Talk to a doctor yourself, don't trust anyone on an internet board or word-of-mouth. Hell I read ...that lasik goes away if you get hit in the head... off a board. I had to laugh so hard I didn't bother correcting them.

If you have any questions, go to a doctor that specializes in Lasik or one of the other
            corrective surgeries and ask.

            Dave -

I can still see at night. My night vision hasn't suffered at all.

The surgery corrects it for your current prescription but as you age your eyes will naturally change. Nothing stops this, that's why most old people wear glasses...might as well not wear them when you're young.

Wrong and wrong. I had PRK 4 years ago, which was the laser surgery that preceded Lasik. My night vision is just fine, and my vision is stable. Eventually, I will need to get reading glasses, but so do most people. And if it does get worse, I just have the surgery again.

The effects can be different for everyone. If its just for cosmetic reasons, I recommend you dont have it done. The chances of a problem are small, but there is a chance you could loose your vision forever. The good doctors only recommend it for people who have activities or jobs that are difficult to do with glasses or contacts.

If you do have it done, dont go to the cheapest place. Find out where all the optometrists go to have it done, and go there.

did you say 20/50 was bad... relax man

I have worse than 20/400 vision, the farthest they will test.

I am thinking about the surgery though, its like $3000

If you think your vision is bad, try not being able to see anything in focus that is farther than 6 inches from your face. What is really bad is at night and when I have glasses on, all lights look like they are the same distance when looking out from over the top of my glasses. I'm currently 22 and will have lasik surgery in August now that my vision has hovered around the same level for about 3 years. My dad recently had lasik also and couldn't be happier and he's worn glasses all his life, much like i have.

I'm 19, and a month ago had the equivalent of 20/750 vision. I started wearing glasses in first grade, and contacts from third grade on. My vision gradually got worse throughout school until it stabilized around age 16-17. It is now absolutely perfect.

First of all, your vision is fine and I have no idea what you're freaking out about. Second of all, Lasik surgery is, in my opinion, the most amazing advance in health technology in 30 years. It's a godsend. I was essentially blind without my contacts for 10 years and spent some money and one crappy afternoon and the next day was absolutely incredible. A little sensative to light for another day or two, and after that perfect. I recommend it to anyone and everyone that needs it.

The thing is, you're too young and your vision isn't stable (not that you need glasses right now anyway). Your vision will continue to change, and until it's been stable for 4 years no respectable clinic will touch your eyes. Don't worry about it yet, but when it all comes down to it, it's COMPLETELY worth it.

Although you can't have it done for a few years.

I've been researching it for a while and I'd recommend looking into intralasik instead of the standard lasik.

Standard lasik they have to use a device with a small blade to cut a flap into your cornea. This is the most unsure part of the whole precedure and if there's going to be a complication, this is the step that'll cause it.

Intralasik uses a laser to make the corneal flap so it's much safer and a lot more precise.

Hey Flamebo, I'm curious as to what your contact prescription was. Mine is at -5.75 and -5.50. I never really was told what my 20/??? score is.

It was -7.50 at it's worst. To be perfectly honest, I can't very that's the same as 20/750. I'd imagine that's the way they score it, though.

I also had the Intralasik done. When it comes to something as important as your vision, you want to do absolutely everything you can to make sure it's perfect.
