Use "Save for Web" from the file menu (or "alt"+"Shift"+"Ctrl"+"S"). That way, you can optimize several different aspects of the final file like the color pallette.
On the right side of the dialogue box, you'll see an arrow in a circle (see pic). Click that, then "optimize to file size". This allows you to set parameters for your color pallette, for example: automatically cutting out colors you didn't use, or combining very similar colors to reduce your overall file size.
