anyone try "cold heat" soldering iron?

I have seen several info merchials and now got a junk email about it. Out of all the things "as sean on TV stuff" this one looks like one that i could actually be interested in.

it is a portable pocket soldering iron that heats up almost instantaniously and cools off fast too.

Seems interesting and plausible but I believe that solder melts at 450 F so 800 F is too high. I'd also like to shake the hand of the person that can solder a board with that tip.

It depends on what kind of solder you are using. Some solder has different melting points. I solder at 800* to keep me from over-heating other components by moving quickly when soldering.

I haven't used one myself, but I've never liked As Seen On TV things. Just something about people yelling at me to buy things or audiences feigning interest and excitement. I'll try to find some reviews on it, but in the meantime I trust this site and it has a lot of neat things.

EDIT: Also, something about people not being able to use the things humans have used for years makes me cringe also

I got one for christmas and tried it out. It works pretty good with small solder. However when you try to touch it to a big glob or thick stuff it does nothing..just sparks a little. I was using it on some wires for my ignition and it wouldn't get close to heating the solder up so i pressed a little harder and ended up breaking the tip. All in all, not really worth the money imo.

Worst soddering iron ever made. I ended up using my 2 year old iron to sodder my xbox modd chip in. They say that it cools down instantly. My butt i burnt my hand after I soddered

I'll stick with my Electric Iron. It hasn't failed me yet.

I need to get a nice gas one though. I hate being constrained to a certain area, lol.

i like the way they say you can stick it in your pocket. i'm just waiting for someone to do this with loose change in their pocket and sue the hell out of them.
