    Kegs?

So, I'm havin a party, getting a keg. Anything I should know about it? What's the best way to cool it. I hear garbage can filled w/ ice, any other good ideas? (cheap ideas, since kegs are $$$)

(btw, I posted this over at pbnation. I figured I should get both an educated (from an educated standpoint) and an educated (from a boozer standpoint) point of view on this topic)

I doubt that half the population of pbn even know what a keg is... those pre pubecent toddlers!

Bathtub + Ice works fine. Only drawback is you can't really get a beer while someone is using the bathroom. Well, you could, but I sure wouldn't trust the beer...

Bathtub + Ice will scratch the bottom of the tub to hell and back. I speak from experience on this one. A metal object that heavy, especially one that attracts drunks like a light does moths, will cause a lot of damage. A clean garbage can is the way to go.

Most places that sell you a Keg will provide a tub for it. And rent you a tap.

AGD, where we are so good we can do it with only ONE tube!

get yourself a plastic 55 gallon drum cut about a third off of the top of it and then fill around the keg with ice. after you get ice in there get yourself a blanket or two to wrap around the top of the barrel too keep it chilled.

make sure you have a SPARE key you dont want to run out. also having an extra tapper helps also just in case it craps out on you and the place you got the keg is closed. pleanty of cups is good thing too.

good luck and please dont be driving.

            have fun stay safe.

I use a keggorator made from a spare mini fridge and about 50 bucks worth of parts from a keg supply house.

/agreed bathtub + keg = scratched up tub.

You've answered your own question. This is the cheapest and most simple way of keeping a keg cold.

They actually sell a tinfoil-esque blanket that wraps around the keg. These work really well and are SO much easier than the ice and bucket method (IMHO). Most bulk liquor dealers I've been to have them. It makes the keg placement a little easier because you only have to worry about spilled beer. That's my input

DO NOT put it in your tub. I did that and when I set it in there, it punched a hole in the bottom.

Hmm, it probably wouldn't scratch my tub, go 80 year old porlen tubs, and a rubber mat.

There are these round plastic buckets you get at target, k-mart, or anything similar that the keg fits in with about 8in around it for ice and leaves about the top 10in sticking up. The things are perfect and a half.

A big trash can is the best bet, it's what I've always seen done, and did. Fill the bottom up with some ice, then around the sides. Make sure you get a durrable trash can though, and kind of a fat one so more ice can go around the sides.

Also, on transportation of the keg, make sure it's secure in a position. You don't want that baby shaking around! Very bad.

DO NOT GET THE UNVIVERSAL TAP.
Make sure you get the tap made for the keg you get. Make it will work, talk to whoever you are getting the keg from about the tap.

We always get a big sturdy plastic tub and fill it with ice.
This way if you need to move it it will slide a little easier. Oh and make sure that it is one with the sturdy rope handles on the side they work the best.
