I'm thinking of doing a BMW E30 project for my college car.... Take a 318, which can be found in good shape but not running for $300 (trust me )and dropping in a chevy LS1 blockthen scavenging vortec 6.0 heads and lower compression, and the M6 which is nice. From there, standard mandrel bent pipes, and 2 T3/4 hybrid turbos, found on family cars from the 80s, and maybe a few stock intercoolers fused together. All of these parts are from the junkyard, obviously. I'd like to port and polish the whole thing to have it breathing, and then get it tuned. The only other mod would be better than stock valve springs, BOV, and maybe a MAF if necessary. I'd need to get a better fuel setup to handle the ~13psi off the twin turbos, which I've calculated spooling around 3000 rpm, which gives me around half of the band in boost. All pipes would be wrapped in asbestos tape to insulate them, or ceramic coated if i could afford it. Eventually a 100shot of dry nitrous could be added to expand the threat range and top out the power.
In addition the LS1 setup would remain quite steetable, not developing boost until 3000rpm or so. with the excessively tall gearing found in the camaro/corvette M6, you're talking an honest 28mpg highway. 1800rpms at 80mph in 6th. The LS1 also improves the balance and decreases the weight of the E30 as comapred to the cast iron monstrosities that come stock from bavaria.
Alot of plumbing to route the oil and air would eb needed, but it would all be custom made from big mandrel bent pipes, which saves $$$.
The lower/bottom end should survive, but I'd need a replacement rear end for the Bimmer. I'm also thinking of custom making fiberglass panels using the originals as the mold to lose weight. A diffusser/undercarriage, along with slight lowering, new tires and springs, would greatly help traction.
Other than that, standard weight reduction stuff, seats, maybe a new head unit to get a CD player in there.
I think that, with liberal use of wrenching and the junkyard, it can be done under 8K.
Shooting for >800HP and >800torque, <2400 pounds in the car.
Thoughts.
