    Reversing Polarity?

Is it possible to reverse the polarity of a magnet with an electrical charge?

not sure... but im positive if this was posting in paintball talk you would get a better answer... even the workshop or tech threads

on a magnet no. but if u make an electo magnet running DC current, then change the flow, yes. what is this for?

It would be for my sketch of a paintball marker. It would move the bolt back and forth.

well you could have the bolt be the core of a solinoid i guess.

not a bad idea. this is kinda how electric motors work. you have some magnets and an electromagnet (basically a piece of metal with coils of wire wrapped around it). when you put current through the electromagnet one way it becomes polarized in one direction and the other way it gets polarized in the other direction. the problem i see with it is this. if you make the bolt the electromagnet you've got a moving part with wires attached to it. that's not such a hot thing to do. if you put the make the bolt the regular magnet you solve that problem but magnets don't really like being smacked around. they lose their polarity if you do that. it shakes up the molecules so that they're not lined up as well as they were. actually, here's a fun experiment. take a non magnetized piece of steel and line it up in a north south direction. now smack it with a hammer for a bit. you'll find that it's now slightly magnetized because when you were hitting it you got the molecules inside moving around and they settled down with a slight bias because of the earth's magnetic field.

the new trains/monorails in japan do this i forget whats its called i just know that it uses alternating magnets to move the train up to 300+mph..its also very quite and very expensive!

I planned on the electromagnet being in the rear of the marker. The bolt would have a metal core and thus be attracted and repulsed by the electromagnet. Is this even possible?

Good ol classic Ghost busters joke. As for reversing poliriteis i have no earthly idea.

i don't quite get what you're saying... metal is attracted to magnets regardless of polarity.

I was thinking that metal could be repelled as well as attracted. I forgot that you would need another magnet to do this.

haha i like how you HAD to add that snatch grip

I ran out of things to add, so I added a snatch grip! I'm trying to figure out if you can attract and repel one magnet with a single electromagnet. Also, how big of a battery would I need to use?

Fairly big, your pushing that bolt at under 80psi, or more, since you have no hammer (correct?). I had a design for a boltless gun, the first valve design was flawed, I gotta thank Squid for pointing that out. Try making more detailed plans and asking people with considerable knowledge. Fortunately, your on AO, so finding such people will not be hard at all.
