the new gto's are front wheel drive aren't they? At least that's what car and driver claimed in 2002 when they previewed pontiac's assperations for the future.

No, it's RWD. The only big V-8 FWD cars I can think of right off hand are Cadillacs, and it's a shame they went that way IMHO... I wish they'd also start bringing over the Holden UTE, which is like the El Camino. Basically, your "GTO" with a little bed. It would be awesome for all my PB gear!
Body on Frame + Rear wheel drive + Big V-8 = Awesome Car!
I'm still waiting for my Grandparents to sell me their '89 Caprice Classic, but they know I'll tub the rear wheel wells and cut a big hole in the hood for a blower... They seem to frown upon that for some reason...Comment

Now this on the other hand...is a WHOLE lot better in either bang for your buck and styling:

The GTO was created when they took a basic car from the current lineup a the time, and slammed a bigger motor in it to make it sporty. Thus creating the trend. The new GTO follows that heritage of taking a basic A to B driver and making it much more fun by upping the horsepower along with other performance enhancements. So in essence it is a modern day muscle car.

40k? thats nuts man, there is like only 1 option on them and that is to add a 6speed manual transmission and that only costs $695
they have a yellow one down at the lot around here that they ahve like $34k on with 6 speed
personally i think they rock look at the torq curve on 'em

actually they have LS1 in them.Originally posted by PersonCurrent GTO's stick to the tradition, the original ones were based off big dumb family sized coupes and they were just the better version with bigger engines..Same thing now.
The reason the new GTO's are cool is because they come with 350 chevy small blocks <5.7 liter engine they advertise it is> im a cubic inches guy none of this liter nonsense...Anyways, in my opinion any car with a decently large v8 = good so i dig the new gtos

I'll tell you this now Being a car guy you take a lets say 1974 Gto and these 2004 Gto both have 350 cubic in.. in them which one has more balls..... that right the 2004 cuz they have been geared differnt with the technolgy of today the mechanichs have computers chips in them to up the gearing in them to make them more powerfull but i still would want to own the 74 because i like most people have a taste for old classic muscle cars and as far as i am concerned there is only 2 muscle cars left today the Viper and the Corvette.... this Gto and the Mustang both very sexy and quick cars.... but i like dont care for this small block stuff i like my car to shake from side to side when i am only hitting 2 grand while i am in netural....
American made is better then those RicersComment

'74?!? Not a very good year for the Goat... Super restrictive smog with the oil crisis and all. Now, if you would've said '64, then I'd have to agree wholeheartedly! I absolutely loved my '66 when I had it (Tri-power baby!!!), and still kick myself everyday for ever getting rid of her..
Pretty much any halfway tweaked ricer today could whup about anything GM put out in '74, including the 454 Chevelle. Now, I'm not a rice fan by any means, and I happen to love some of what GM puts out, so don't take it that way. It's just a shame what they did to those cars in order to appease people back then.Comment

Yeah thats my point. It was like 38900 or near that. After taxes well over 40k. This was a yellow with black leather interior. Manual transmission. The big jump in the price was from these ugly aftermarket rims they put on it. Not an OEM upgrade but some other kind.Originally posted by skife40k? thats nuts man, there is like only 1 option on them and that is to add a 6speed manual transmission and that only costs $695

Also what I said earlier about the monte carlo. I wasn't comparing the gto to the monte carlo, I was comparing it to how it really isn't as cool as the older ones just like the monte carlos.Comment

'74 = bad year for any car first off.
that is the only reason the new one has more power.
now motors back in the day were waaay easier to work on, you could throw a different cam in new carb and a set of headers and gain ALOT of HP.
try doing that today.
