I have now joined the bike world

Like the title says, i've now got my first bike, its a 93, 750 Katana. This thing is insane. Being my first bike i'm taking damed good care in learning how to drive and work this bike. Its at my warehouse where i'll be driving it around for the next 2 weeks getting used to the shifting and turning, etc. I really wanted a cruiser for my first bike but i got this bike and a helmet for 1500 so i can't say its a bad deal. Its in mint condition and the engine was just rebuilt by a friend of mine. New brakes all around and the clutch was redone 1k miles ago so its all good. I'll post pics up of it when i get it home.

    Two points:

    1. I'm jelous. If I could do it over again, I never would have bought my car. I would have bought a cheaper car and a motorcycle. If for nothing else than the gas milage.

    2.

Congrats! A canoftuna is a good choice for a first bike--smooth powerband, predictable and not too tweaky for a new rider. Though I bet in a couple years youll be wanting a R1 or R6 or Jixxer 750. :)

Btw you ride a bike not drive it. Cars are driven bikes are riden :)

PS Cphilip is right take the MSF course. Not only will you get a discount on insurance after completing the course, but you will learn a lot of skills that takes other riders years of experience to learn on their own.

Where i live you can get a permit type thing when you are 15 and a half but you can only go 50 miles away and you can only have a bike thats 250cc or less . Insurance will suck though, and not being able to do anything but mow yards at my age kinda sucks too. My older friend, hes like 25ish, his dad and him just bought a suzuki hayabusa, but he keeps it at his house and rides it all the time...man that thing is so sweet, he has riden for awhile but on this bike hes not used to riding with people on it yet, but when he does, its gonna be so much fun riding with him.

sweet bike, definitely need pics tho. I just turned 16, and am planning on selling my camaro for either a suzuki GSX-R 650 or a triumph daytona 600 . for some reason I've always felt more comfortable riding a bike. it's an addiction. started out with BMX, then dirtbikes, then graduated to streetbikes last year, riding my stepdads CBR600RR i suppose it helps when the people around you ride. although my mom still waits for that fateful call from the hospital.

Thats probably right! Its high for a young person and probably for good reason.

My kids insurance on a 250cc bike is 225 a year. Mine is like 116 a year for FOUR Bikes. Minimum coverage liabilty only on both those. But it goes up logrythmicaly from there too. The insurance guy said he had just quoted a kid $16,000 a year (yea thousands!) on a High cc Crotch rocket bike.

I'm 20, getting pics sometime this weekend. Insurance isn't going to be bad at all because i'm doing the smart thing. I'm getting my mom to sign the title in her name and put it under the family insurance, so therefore its not under me, but i'm elligble to ride it. I do plan on taking a course at one of the colleges for the bike. Around here they offer many courses that'll get you the permit to ride without going to the DMV just by completing the course.

Good deal. Many insurance companies will not just add on a motorcycle though. So do some checking. Many want them to be added as an additional vehicle which is not cheap. Check Progressive if you have any trouble but you will have to be named as a rider if that happens and it will be based some on you and your age. Progressive and many others will not give a discount for MSF course if you are under 24 but its still a good things to do.

Progressive has an online quote calcultor you can use to try out some different things and see what it would be. Check that out.

Taking the MSF course for license is a state by state thing. Ours here will only accept the Intermediate course and can turn it down and make you pass the driving course anyway. And either way here you must take and get the Learners Permit and hold if for 6 months before they will let you get a full license. So check your DMV real good on that. Most of them will not accept the beginners course which you need. But will the intermediate one.

Here they do the permit system, You can get your permit, ride for a year i believe, maybe 6 months before you can carry a passenger. Insurance is going to be taken care of on monday. Its a teachers insurance so i have no idea as to what they will do, but they've had the lowest rates for my family thus far.
