Even if he did let go, the chain wouldn't stop spinning immediatly. It would still be spinning unless he was cutting branches on top of a tree that was about 75ft tall.

not really if you dont have the chainsaw set up properly when you release the gas the chain will keep spinning. but as said above im sure he held onto the chain saw while falling.
