my dvd rom is somehow set to region 8...how to change it back to region 1?

title says it all...i'm having a lot of problems since reformatting. one being that my dvd player is somehow set to region 8, and cannot play dvd's. any ideas on how to change it back? it's not an option under properties in device manager, i already looked there.

also another question...i've been getting a lot of locking up recently with my computer, with lots of programs freezing and making me end them manually. could this have anything to do with me replacing the heatsink recently? could i have damaged the processor and caused this to happeN?

thanks ahead of time for the help...

I'm not sure, but I think it may be a firmware thing for the DVD.

Go to My COmputer, Right clicck your DVD-Rom go to properties. Click the Hardware tab, select your dvd-rom, click properties. Go to the DVD Region tab and select United States. Click OK, OK again, and you're done.

Or you can google for something liek DVD Region Free and find progs that let you play any dvd.

try changing it in WMP(if that's what you're using) or getting one of the Region Free hacks,

ok..so it works fine in powerdvd...but i still don't have the option to change the dvd region under properties in the device manager, which angers me a lot because i had it before. wtf?!

it's weird because there's also a very weird problem i've been having with nero (it's missing buttons that it had before...weird, i know..)

                        Here: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/DVDregion.mspx

Be forewarned, you can only do this a certain number of times before it locks.

In your screen shot you have an Other devices with a ? what is this item and why is it formally unrecognised by windows? The reason is other devices can cause conflicts regardless of the garbage that Windows says about devices working properly.
I would have thought by now that you might have worked out that you and building computers do not go together in the same sentence...this is your pc problem for August, July was your sisters (?) machine that you built and it wasn't working

i didn't build mine or hers...can we not belittle me? i know how to take care of computers, and this kind of crap sneaks up on me for no apparent reason. i require assistance every now and then because computers act randomly and inconsistently at times (a lot of the time). i did a simple reformat and reinstallation of the stuff that was on the computer, and this is what happened; things stopped working that worked perfectly fine before. somehow that's my fault...

anyway, can we get back on topic and maybe stop my computer from pissing me off any more?

and i have no idea what those two devices are: multimedia controller, multimedia video controller. ???????????????????????????????

edit- sorry about going on the defensive, but i've had it up to HERE with my computer giving me BS for no reason...and i just want it to be over.

I am not belittling you, I gave you sound (as in good) advice many months ago and you went against it and pretty much straight away you had issues...this was way before this set of latest problems. You post a PC problem of one kind or another at least once a month...am I wrong?

multimedia controllers tend to be the ones that are on the motherboard install disk, install the 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 drivers etc from your mother board install disk ignoring any messages windows gives you saying about the lack of digital signature...you have a conflict that windows is keeping to itself (nothing new) this may not be the cause of your DVD drive not behaving but remember (if you even knew) that the MB drivers disk often contain the generic cd/dvd adapti (sp?) drivers and an incorrectly installed cd/dvd drive will play up if all of the drivers are not included.
To do this the easiest way is to delete one of the items giving you the error message through device manager and then restart your machine and put the MB drivers disk in the cd drive and go through the wizard that will start and then repeat this (deleting and restarting) until all the ?'s are gone then try the dvd region resets. A dvd drive is by default a multimedia unit.
