How do I know what kind of Ram I need?

Is there a menu somewhere that will tell me what kind of ram I need? (Windows XP on a dell computer about 2 years old)

You can use memory configurators on certain sites. Crucial has a pretty good one.

That works but i'm not sure if I have a 400 or 533 fsb
I did find using SiSoftware Sandra that my fsb comes up as 4x 133 (532Mhz), does that mean its 533?

Yes, that sounds right, but you also need to know what the CAS timing of your current memory is, because mixing memory types can result in poor performance or a very unstable PC. You should be able to look up the memory timings for your DDR RAM by either looking at the current BIOS settings or physically removing the memory from the PC and reading the suggested timings off of the chip labels. The timing numbers will be in a format like 3 8-4-4 with a voltage recommendation (2.6V - 3.1V for example)

If you've got the money to burn, buy GeIL. I never thought that the performance improvement from one brand of memory to another was important, until I purchased GeIL. It's night and day. If you can, heck, even sell the memory you've got now and replace it all with GeIL brand. It's like getting a new computer - one that never locks up or crashes too.
