    Need Cheering Up...

Well, school started today (wednesday), and it was my first day in high school.

I'm pretty bummed out though, seems like theres nothing good about these upcoming few years other than getting my car in a year and a half. My schedule sucks...electives are geography, spanish, and TWO IT classes that I need to take to take in order to stay in the current school (its a brand new school, but im not zoned for it. It's either this, or what has to be the worst school in the county). And my social life sorta sucks too.

So, can someone please point out some good points to the freshman year that I'm obviously missing? (And please don't say anything like "well now your closer to ________", because that's not what I'm asking).

    Thanks,
    -mjs

stay on top of everything and try not to fall behind in class. Be active and talk to your teachers, let them know you exist and that you're interested in doing well. I remember last year I had a B+ (89.2%) in my AP physics class, but my teacher bumped it up to an A- cause he noticed that i was working hard and asking questions/talking to him after class.

Good luck man, High School is a great experience if you stay on top of things

Yea, I know all that, and thanks for the input, but that's not what I meant. It just seems like the next year is gonna do nothing but suck. All it is is academics, and i hate 5 of my classes.

      Help!

i just had my first year in high school, and if i hadnt played football or rugby or gone to the irish culture club, i wouldnt have made nearly as many friends as i have. get involved with stuff, and you will meet other people. seriously it works.

heh my school year is gonna be hell too....AP bio, AP psyc, AP stats, AP econ/Govnt, AP english lit, AP art history.......

          Good points for freshman year...hmm.

you get to start out with a pretty much clean slate, which is always good. Try to join a sport or something, that'll help keep life interesting. Once you get into the groove of things life really isn't too bad

Amen to that, football is instant friendships that last a long time. Same goes with other sports.

Don't think I can/should. I kick major arse at football, if i do say so myself, but I injured my shoulder (dislocated) and if I fall on it / it dislocates again, i'll need surgery.

So yea, that realllly sucks, cause last year football was one of the only things that kept me sane

Watch me get blasted for this... but tough, I call it as I see it.

Figure out what college your going to, what you want to do, and what kind of grades you need to get into it. Don't worry about going beyond that - I had a 3.9 and could have gotten into any College I wanted - literally.

Now... HS is not about academics, learning any valuable skill for life. Its about learning life skills. The things that will serve you best... are not in class. They are the friendships you make, the interaction and social skills you develop, and the memories. Have fun.... do what needs done academically, but do something else, something that develops those friendships and prepares you for life.

Now, if your plan is to grow up, go to college, get a high paying job in Japan.... study academics LOL

you'll thank your school for the IT classes, I took all the ones I could get and still didn't feel like I learned much Also try and get in collage classes once you're a junior/senior. It's ALOT cheaper then paying a collage for them!!!

Welcome to High School, it sucks. I go to Jupiter High school, we just got 900 new freshmen, the school already couldnt handle anymore kids, last year, now we have 900 new kids, boy are they small, they get smaller every year. We have classes of 50+ kids in one class. So heres your cheer up, be glad you dont go to Jupiter High school. Only good year in High School for me, will be next year when I am a senior, so I can finally leave highschool.

Make some good friends to hang out with. Get a girlfriend. Practice your driving skills with your parents. Figure out how to screw the system so you can get what you want for classes next semester. Talk to your teachers and guidance councelors. Slug through the weekdays so you can play paintball on the weekends. Join a club. Get a job (ugh). Get interested in some more hobbies.
Keep yourself busy and you won't have a problem. The last thing you want to do is sit in front of the TV and blow off your homework like 80% of my classmates did in high school. Freshman year is usually confusing, just don't get caught up in all the drama and crap that goes on in high school and have a good time.

I felt the same way my freshman year. IF you dont participate in any school activitys it kind of sucks. I got behind and screwed around my freshman year. No its my fourth year in hs and im in a junior home room. Couldnt care less about anyone in my junior classes. just get active in something to make you look forward to getting done.

Props to echo419 for the sig

Yeah, also dont slack off freshmen year, because then you will slack off the rest of your high school life, then your pretty screwed, you will get the idea, that you can slack off, when Junior year comes around, thats the most important year.

Thanks man, I gotta keep that in mind.

Thanks all, I appreciate all the help your giving me. I think I may have some sort of depression; Sometimes i'm completely fine and happy, but then sometimes (increasingly more often) I get depressed and it just seems like nothing is worth doing, and everything around me, in front of me (future) and in back of me (last couple of years) sucks. I felt this way when I started this thread, but now I feel fine.

Can anyone help with this, since this is probably the bigger problem?

(Currently in a good mood, )

If you think you are depressed, go see your doctor. Tell you parent(s)/guardian(s) how you are feeling and let them know what you think is wrong. Depression is very serious if not treated. It could lead to many things including declining quality in grades, loss of friendships, and maybe even (dont mean to scare you here but it is serious) a loss of the will to live.

On another level, what you are feeling could also be a result of the new environment you are in. New people, friends, teachers, etc. All of these things coupled with the schedule that you find completely boring/hard could also play a role in the way you are feeling. Or it could be those magic years we like to call puberty and all of the "changes" going on. What I did to my schedule to help me get through the school year is pick 2-3 classes that are fun, easy, and are somewhat related to what your hobbies are. For me this was woods. I know my school has many classes that are fun and will get you ready for the world. I hope you get everything figure out. Freshman year is hard, and all you have to do is stick with it and you'll be fine. Good luck!
