    question about paying a ticket

at the beginning of the summer i was driving out to Iowa from Colorado for a funeral (grandma died) and i got a 1 point ticket for doing 12 over. I figured, meh $50 fine i can pay that and just get it out of my hair. well i kind of tucked that bad boy away for 3 months and later realized, holy crap, i have to go to court or pay. it was either drive 400 miles to go to court, or pay the fine..i decided to pay it. What I didn't know was that you have to pay the ticket within 20 days of the offence and i definitly missed that time frame. I tried to pay it anyway but got a letter back today saying that the ticket was now considered a summons and i had to show up in court. hmm..court date was 4 days ago, great. Question is, what do i do now? I've heard that there is a warrent out for my arrest because of failure to appear in court, is this true? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

you should consult real legal counsul. do not take what i am about to say as legal counsul.

however, if it was a different state, you likely can do nothing and the ticket will not hurt you. that is provided you don't get ANY violation of any kind in that state. if you fail to signal and the cops pull you, you will be arrested on the spot and taken to jail.

if it is your home state, cops will likely be coming to your house soon. it is best to turn your self in to the local authorities.

Ha onece my dad forgot to pay a ticket, and never got any warnign sn the mail or anythingk like that. Well he was pulled over for an expired tag and had a warrent out for his arrest sooo he was arrested on the spot and had to spend the day in county lockup until we could get all the bail money togeather. It was kinda funny, i used to joke about someone named bubba making him his women in the prison.

Kevmaster.. Naw.. cops won't show up to your house over something like that. At least in Maine I know.. Warrents for arrest.. hell everyone else em. I know some kid that who's gotten 6 of them... and hasn't spent a minute in jail.

Mikey-All that's going to happen is you'll probably have to pay a bigger fine.. hopefully. I could be totaly wrong, but that's how I've known things to work.

I doubt the police have time go hunt down people for traffic offenses.

Call a local atty or call that county's courthouse. There's probably a number on the letter.

Sterling, in Logan county. Since you're a Denver man, have you had any experience with this? I'd like to pay the fine (even with an added ammount for previous reasons) since I go to school from 8-2:10, then work from 3 til 9. I honestly don't have much time at all to do anything.

Don't let it lapse. Stay on top of it. They won't arrest you, but they will mess with you. My little brother got nailed for speeding in Ohio and "forgot" to pay the ticket. He got a notice from the MD MVA about 6 months later suspending his d/l until he rectified the situation.

                    good luck!

Many states have joined into a reciprocity agreement recently, so that it isn't just up to your home state to have agreements with a couple other states.

There are around 40-43 states linked up this way, and if you commit an offence in any of them, it will be reported back to your home state, and you can get your license revoked.

Trust me, I looked it up when I got my $200 ticket in PA at IAO

I'd definately call the courthouse first and, if you can, talk to the DA or the assistant DA. Explain everything, don't make tons of excuses. I got popped in kansas and was pretty much in the same situtation. I called explained and just had to pay the fine.

I once did something similar, albeit closer to home.

My uncle who was a cop called me and told me I need to go to that county court house, and advised me not to get pulled over on the way - I tried to pay the clerk, she said I had to see the judge - kinda scary, went like this

Judge reads me my rights and asks if I understand them, I tell him I do
Judge: Do you want a lawyer
                            Me: No your honor
Judge: Are you sure you do not want a lawyer
                            Me: No your honor
Judge: You have the right to a lawyer, are you sure?
Me: Your honor, do I need one? (now Im getting worried)
Judge: Did you come here one your own or were you arrested?
Me: I came on my own sir
Judge: Are you prepared to pay the fine plus court costs
                            Me: Yes sir
Judge: $100 fine (I think thats what it was) plus $100 court costs - pay the clerk and your free to go, make sure you keep your receipt and the letter she will give you with you at all times for seven days
                            Me: Thank you sir

My divorce proceedings too less questions, and less time

alright, good news! I called the county clerk at the courthouse and explained what had happened (no excuses, just said i didn't pay the ticket or go to court) Now all I have is a $20 fine for not appearing in court on top of the $50 ticket. I'm off to wells fargo now to get a money order and then i'm a free man, no more arrest warrant or anything.

thanks for the advice as well.
