Depending on the use a DSLR may not be the right choice every time. If you are willing to deal with the focal length range a small prosumer digital can be a very nice option. The Canon Pro1 has an L series lenses that will give any non high end Nikon or Canon glass a real run for it's money. Add to that the small size, and it's a good option for people that are not looking to have exchangable lenses.

Personally I'm all for the DSLR concept, but it's not right for everyone. Now if Nikon would just come out with a real replacement for the D100. I really wish I had Canon glass right now. They are doing so much better in the DSLR market. And I could dream of the 1Ds.

I've done a little bit of research on the 8 megapixel prosumer digicams and I have a LOT more nice things to say about the Minolta A2 than this. I don't know if you've handled this one yourself before, but it's pretty chunk, It's an ergonomic catastrophy.

Check out the article on popular photography and imaging.

You get Anti-Shake along with 1500 shots on the A2 as opposed to 800 on the F828 per charge of the battery, which is another plus. Image quality is higher at ISO 100. The Electronic viewfinder is also the best out of all simmilar cameras.

Please at least consider the Minolta A2 and check it out before you get the F828.

You did look at a $900 MSRP camera :P

In all honesty though, while the professional range of D-SLR's are expensive, they are worth their weight in gold.

Just be glad no one reccomended a Hasselblad(film camera). A few grand for the camera. Seven for a single lense(thousand). While were at it we might as well add a nice Imacon drum scanner. Theres another $18,000. Heck, we need a new computer. $4000 for a nice DP 2.5ghz Apple Powermac G5 with about 4 gigs of RAM. Jeez, we need a new monitor. Let's get two of the new Apple 30" computer monitors. Another $6,000. Plus the only video card that can runthem(either one or two), the nVidia 6900 for the mac(only)Dual-link Dual DVI outputs. $600. Heck, nice Nikon D2H for about $3300. Plus accessories. Another $1000.

            That's this week.

Oh yeah, the divorce attorney... The setlement. WHEN WILL IT STOP?!?!

It's an evil cycle, but oh so fun. Note than anyone who could actually afford that kind of equipment, costing tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, is one lucky guy, or gal.

There is one camera I would take a serious look at right now. It's cheap, great quality, and easy to use when you want it to be, but also has all the manual setting for when you want to play. That is the Canon G5.

I current shoot a Canon 10D and a Canon Elph 330. Since I got the 10D, I put all my film camera away.

You like that 10D? Im probably going to end up getting the 20D. Any recommendations on lenses? I was thinking a midrange L series zoom, with a wide angle lense (12-24 or 10-22) and maybe a 50mm prime.

Common if we are going all out, let's get a Canon 1Ds (or two) with a whole set of L lenses. And a 1v for fun too.

BTW it's a GeForce 6800 Ultra. It's the only card with DualLink DVI at all. And it's a hellova GPU on there. Yep, I'm a geek. :P

The 10D is a great camera. I only have one complaint and that iis it needs a split focus prisum. Though I have not seen many new SLRs with one, so I would have that complaint with any new camera.

Stick with Canon lenses. It will save you from having to buy all new glass in a year The one thing you have to keep in mine is the crop factor. This is a huge annoyance since wide glass is overly expensive. The one lens I highly suggest is the 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM. This is my favorite lens as it is good optics, cheap, and a nice zoom range.

Here is a list of what I currently have.

Canon 50mm 1.8 II (http://www.adorama.com/CA5018AFU.html) <-- Amazingly cheap and pretty fast glass

                            Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro (http://www.adorama.com/CA10028AFN.html)

                            Canon 2x Teleconverter (http://www.adorama.com/CA2XAF2U.html)

                            Canon 16-35mm 2.8L (http://www.adorama.com/CA1635U.html) <--- Great lens, costs a small fourtune

Canon 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM (http://www.adorama.com/CA28135ISU.html) <-- This is by far my favorite lens. This is the one that I never leave home without.

Canon 70-200 2.8L IS USM (http://www.adorama.com/CA70200ISU.html) <--- This is by far the best zoom lens Canon makes. I love it, but it's pretty damn heavy. This is what I shoot most of my paintball with.

I also have two Sigma lenses. I bought these when I first got the 10D to cut down on some costs. The biggest mistake I have made yet.

Sigma 28-105 2.8-4.0 (http://www.adorama.com/SG2810528EOS.html) <-- Not a bad lens for the money, but still would not buy again.

Sigma 28-300 3.5-6.3 (http://www.adorama.com/SG28300EOS.html) <--- I knew it was not going to be great, but I never dreamed it would suck so much. This lense actually broke from normal use while at Shatnerball last year. I never bothered to send it back.

My next lens. If I continue to shoot paintball I plan on buying the Canon 28-300 3.5-5.6L IS (http://www.adorama.com/CA28300ISU.html). This is exactly the type of zoom that would be nice and since it's paintball, unless it's indoors, I don't need real fast glass.

Actually, the 1Ds is nice, and it's 11MP so you can blow up the prints to life sized cardboard cut outs, but the nice Canon now is the 1D Mark II. At 8mp at 8fp with 40 shot buffering is give you nice large crsip prints and can make sure you capture that perfect action shot.

Well, I just preordered the Canon 20D at adorama. Wish me luck! I still have time to decide on the glass, but that 28-135 IS looks good. So does the 16-35 L, though that seems like it might be a bit much for me in the beginning. Any other thoughts on good wide-angle lenses? They are coming out with that 10-22 with the 1.6 crop made just for the 20D and 300D, maybe I should check that out. Its a bargain at $799 I might also get the 50mm, and pick up that nice 70-200 in the future, though I might check out the 100-400 IS.

Thanks for the help! I may be bugging you again in the future.
