It sys her reserve only partially opened, which probably slowed her down, but still, 120 mph is insanely fast and I can't believe she only got a fracture. She is lucky to say the least.

I was hoping for some wicked cool story about how she steered herself to water and then got herself completely vertical so she didn't splat on contact...

A friend of mine survived a parachute failure also. He was much worse off. He landed feet first on a parking lot. Missed a parked car by a few feet (would have been MUCH better to hit the car). He hit so hard that it cracked the roof of his mouth! The worse part was that he was awake the entire time. Compressed his spine and he lost the use of his legs. He had a good outlook. He wore a shirt that said "I bounced and lived". He also jumped again (from a wheel chair). However, the press coverage was way more than he was comfortable so he never did it again. He really just wanted to "get back on the horse".

BTW, once you reach terminal velocity it doesn't matter how high up you are. You won't fall any faster.

Added: He "pulled" his main and nothing happened. What he didn't know was the the little chute designed to pull out the main was caught behind him. When he depolyed the reserve they both deployed and tangled. There wasn't anywhere near enough time to fix it. It was an expermential design...

Isn't terminal velocity right around 120mph? Which means with a partially opend chute she was probably traveling slower than that?

terminal velocity is either 116 mph or 216 mph if I remember correctly, I want to say its 216 though...

that's the acceleration due to gravity on earth.

116 is average terminal velocity for a falling human. you can make it lower or higher depending upon your orientation and any extra area you can present against the vertical plane.

                              hence the use of 'chutes.
