War heros on cerial boxes, how far off is it?

I was looking up womens soccer stuff, and I found this link. http://www.growingfast.com/Perspecti...l1_april.shtml

Read the article, it's definately food for thought. Here's the opening two paragraphs :

the article reads fast, and it's really kinda scary that it even needs to be said in that way. But, I suppose, it's possible to see it these days. Just something to think about.

cerial is good all times of the day, infact I think im gonna go get a cup of it right now. I also think they should not do that, because I don't want to see some army dude pointing a gun at me while I eat, don't get me wrong im not anti army, but I just don't like the idea. I also don't like the idea of seeing some CNN embedded reporter on my box just because he got shot, we need to keep to tony the tiger and the cooky crisps guy, o and the frosted shredded wheat guy.

Interesting read. Thanks for bringing it up, Tyger.

The author's closing line: "Celebrity can be bought and sold. Heroism must be earned."
              - but heroism can be sold, too.

This culture has blurred the line between celebrities and heros, worshipping athletes and actors as if they were doing something significant, and giving genuine heroes a taste of fame in 15-minute servings. Can we really expect a military (or police or firefighter) hero to maintain old-fashioned decorum and turn down the truckload of money that advertisers offer them?

This has already happened. Think of Gen. Chuck Yeager in AC-Delco commercials, for maybe the most famous example.

Well, I personally dont view sports personalities, celebrities, or other similar folks as "heroes". Do I think that soldiers and sailors should be worshipped? No. However, I think they earn the title of hero more aptly than, say, an actor, or sports person.

First thing to come to my head; "it's a plan by the army to get more people to enlist". People see these military heroes/celebrities on cereal boxes, and they'll want to imitate them. I just saw that simpsons episode where bart and his buddies form a boy band and get people to join the military through subliminal messages, so that is probably why I thought that.

That's just a thought I had. I don't think anyone should buy cereal because somone else eats it, or endorses it. Read the ingrediants and what's in it, that's what matters. In my opinion, if your out there fighting for our country, your a hero. It takes a lot of guts to risk your life like that, and I have so much respect for everyone our there. However, I don't know if I'd lose respect for you if you earn some cash by putting yourself on a cereal box. Everyone needs cash.

I could go for some kix right about now......
