This is to settle a bet between me and a friend..I won't tell you who believes what because it might "impact your decision", lol. So, do you consider The Offspring punk?

Ok, I have not listened to the Offspring since about 95 or 96, but at that time, they were as much punk as you were gonna get. Punk is a very hard genre to nail down. In my mind there are many different styles of punk.

UK punk of the 70's (Sex pistols, Buzzcocks, the Clash, the Damned, etc...)
US Punk of the 70's (Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, etc...) (Also known as NY Punk)
Punk of the 80's (Misfits, Black Flag, Dead kennedy's, Dead Milkmen, etc...)
Punk of the 90's (This is where it gets hazy...Rancid, the Offspring, Green Day, etc...)

Punk has seen a revival in the underground world that finally is starting to make main stream. These bands have been around a long time, but just recently started to get the spotlight.

Also, I know there are lots of bands I left off from the 80's and 90's. Pennywise, NOFX, Dropkick Murphy's, Bad Religion.

In my mind, "true" punk died in the early 80's, but there are still a few bands trying to keep it alive, but it will never become mainstreem like it did in the 70's.

Ok, you are now covering a lot of ground. To me the early years were not punk, just as the later years really are not either. Sure, Patti Smith, Velvet Underground and the like were a rebellious sound. A stick it to the mainstream media sound, but to me that is not punk, just a mere start. If you go that route, grunge would be punk also, and in my mind it is not.

Also, Rancid is as much Punk as it is Ska, especially their early stuff.

Yeah, I agree with you guys... I think that The Offspring used to have some punk songs on their first album or two, but not anymore. Although, I do think that their new album Conspiracy of One is pretty good.

Other than Greenday, are there really even any punk bands left (that still record)? I know NOFX came out with a new song a little while ago (Franco Un-American), but other than that, am I missing something?

There are ALOT of underground punk bands.

Anti-Flag seems to be the most popular right now, but having known these guys for years, I can not stand them, their additudes or their political statements.

Deceiving Ralph is a great band out of Cinni, OH. They take the more comical side of Punk, sorta like the Dead Milkmen. If you like the Milkmen, I suggest you have a listen to DR.

Many others, but I am ripping CDs right now and making it hard to type.

They definately used to be punk. They were pretty close with AFI, which is, without a doubt, punk. The Offspring's last two albums were anything but punk, and I thought they sucked a big one.
