Ten days ago, the VP of my club died from a heart attack at our local field. I think that made a lot of people think about what life means. We certainly thought about what Martin's life meant, to his family and to we his friends.

It made me think about two old cliches: "No man is an island", and "No one lives forever". Maybe some people are islands, and if so, when they die they are completely gone, as if washed away on the tide. My friend was NOT an island, though maybe he was a rock, a mountain of strength. He was a great player to have at your side in a game. He was an energetic and active man, handy and helpful. He was quiet, but had a mischevious sense of humour you had to watch out for. His love of life, and for this game, was apparent even to people who had just met him.

To some extent, Martin lives on, though his body is gone. Part of him lives on in his wife and children. Part of him lives in the things he built as an engineer. Part of him will live on through his friends and paintball-comrades, and the many people for whom he made paintball more enjoyable.

The meaning of HIS life, maybe, is the effect he had on the world around him. He left it just a little bit better than he found it.

"Life isn't hard. Get up, go to work, eat three meals, take a good s**t, and go to bed."

                      -- George Carlin

I question the notion that life must have a "meaning", as if someone is keeping score. Isn't it enough that we're alive at all? Billions of years ago some protien came in contact with some carbohydrates in the precence of heat and acid, and out of that sprang walking, talking, philosophizing humans. (ok, maybe they didn't "spring" out...)

Ultimatly, the only meaning you will have is your own. If you think "I did good.", if you are happy, then you've got some meaning. Nobody else can give purpose or meaning to any of us.

I think you are wrong. In fact, I know it. Life may not have a divinely-inspired purpose, but most every life means something. Living the life, a person can't necessarily say what their own life means, but when someone you know dies, you see what their life means to you, and to everyone else.

Maybe the deceased was an adversary, or a terrible criminal, and you're glad they're dead. The world is better off without that person. They caused suffering. Their life meant pain to others. That's something.

Maybe they were a good person. Cured a disease, created beautiful art, or simply had a kind word that brightened the day of everyone they met. Those people made the lives of others better, in some way. They are missed and mourned. Their life brought joy, their death, sadness.

It's a cliche, and a sappy movie, but go watch "It's a Wonderful Life".

Don't worry, Jeff. I don't smoke clove cigarrettes or wear torn black clothes all the time. I'm not one of these existentialist frenchie types. ;-)

Of course our lives have meaning and importance to those we know/love/live with. My point was, when someone asks "what is the meaning of life?" they are typically really asking "What should I be doing right now to be 'right' in my life?", and that is the wrong question to be asking.

Each of us have very different ideas of 'right' and 'wrong'. Each of us thinks the other could do something different or 'better' and improve their lives, despite the fact that we are all pretty smart, thinking people. (Take me and Pickle as an example. We would most likely get along very well if we met each other, right up until the matter of being a patriotic american, or doing military service came up. Both of us seem to be decent people, but we have very different, and equally opinionated, outlooks on some important subjects.)

My long, meandering point is, if we take anyone else's advice on what "life means", we aren't living our own life. At the end of the day the only people you really have to worry about are your loved ones and the voice in your head.

Our lives have meaning to those we know, but I don't know if that's enough to say "Life Has Meaning."
