I think if the kids are the primary reason why you're buying a game machine, the Gamecube is definitely the way to go. The games are simple to get into, characters the kids can grow to like, Nintendo first party developers have a really good way to making sure kids know how to play the game through their intuitive controls and on screen information that sometimes, your kid doesn't need to know how to read in order to know how to play it. Here are a few titles I know the kids would probably enjoy:

    Zelda: Windwaker
    Luigi's Mansion
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Super Mario Party
    Starfox Adventure
Any of the Star Wars games

There are other games I've enjoyed that isn't geared towards the kids but have friendly graphics so if your kids wanted to watch you play, they can:

    Super Metroid Prime
    Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicals
    Tales of Symphonia

Don't get me mixed up as a Nintendo fanboy either. I actually own a lot of systems: NES, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Sega Dreamcast, 3DO, Gameboy SP, Sony Playstation 1/2, Xbox, Gamecube.

Anyway, good luck with your decision. If you have any questions with the quality of games, check out www.gamerankings.com . They have an extensive database of game reviews and ratings. Check out your local video game store too and see what they have available.

Come back and let us know what you bought! :)

For their age, I would recommend the Game Cube. It has the best games for their age. Get them Super Monkey Ball 2 , even you'll have a hard time beating that game, it took me a while.

Right now I own a modded xbox, it doesn't seem to have many games that they might like, and the PS2 IMHO is a bit out-datted. Yes I did own one, I know what its like.

WHAT WHAT WHAT!!! Xbox owns the ps2. Ps2's games are rushed out and underdevelouped. Xbox games are given extra time if there's potential for a great game. Crimson Skies went from a regular dogfight game to a kick- online dogfight game.

Halo 2 will own the entire ps2's library.

              PS who?!

I mainly play on pc's but i do have a gamecube and must say it is not "just for the kiddies". I personally do not play it much nor do I have many games for it (4 to be exact) but the games i do have are of very good quallity (except for one) all the graphics are supurb and are overall just kick *** games. Personally I like the gamcube controller the best out of all 3 systems. I have played on my friends ps2 and really just cannot stand how it feels. The controller is so small in my hands and i feel like my hands are going to cramp up on me. Also the graphics are much poorer than the gamecube and I have noticed a performance lag while playing ps2. Xbox would be my first choice mainly because of the recently lowered price, the graphics and the hard drive capabilities it has. The controller for me just does not quite feel right. It's kinda um... big but i guess you can get used to it. And Halo just rocks

sorry dude. When you buy a console that just will not play metal gear solid, Ico, all the final fantasies, the silent hills, the suikodens, devil may cry, chrono trigger/cross, xenogears, xenosaga, castlevania:SOTN, Vagrant story, and the soon to be released mgs3, you have just wasted your money-unless you already have a ps2.

yeah, Halo is good. It is however, ONE game.

lol, the only games out of those that i have even heard of are final fantasy, metal gear solid, and castlevania and I can't stand any of those games so in my case i would NOT be wasting my money buying a different console

That might be true for you and your taste of games...but there are definitely more games out for the Xbox other than Halo that make it a worth while purchase. Gaming is like paintball equipment...it's all user preferences. A game you might highly regard as a good game might not be true for another.

But don't get me wrong, I like some of the games you've mentioned in your post.

Yes, it depends on your taste in videogames I guess. For most casual gamers that wouldn't recognize a profound videogame if it fell on their head, the xbox is probably a better way to waste time.
