    English to English translation needed...

In my never ending search for proof we both speak the same language.... I find myself more and more convinced we do not...

An eBay seller from England states this:

cheap as chips at a tenner

Now I gotta figure thats "mighty" cheap but... I have no earthly idea what a tenner is... And how it relates to Chips.

Pretty well everywhere but the US "chips" would be fries.

I dunno what the other one is.

I thought something like that at first... but it says "at" a "tenner". Like some kind of place. Some kind of place like a Five and Dime store? Or a Dollar Store? A food court or something? Vendor that sells things cheap and sells Chips? Maybe?

I mean chips and perhaps even tenner can be diagnosed but there is something more to the joining of them in that expression. With the strategicly placed "at" means some kind of place thats common and known for cheap Fries I should think. That place is the key I am about to suspect. And its someplace nicknamed "a tenner"

For some reason I think your reading too hard into it. I would read it to mean something like, "Cheap as fries at the price of 10 bucks". Well, that's what I thought of immediately in my head, lol. Maybe I am missing something...

I had the same thought as Stix.

But it's not quite "cheap as fries at ten dollars", meaning as cheap as $10 french fries. The item being sold at $10 is as "cheap as chips", relative to it's own value. Chips being cheap and plentiful, of course.
