Just because the different parts are the same sizes, doesnt mean its gonna be the same if you move them around. They switched the red and green parts, making the space below 2x8 instead of the original 3x5. Then with the orange and yellow(i think, im color blind) parts wouldnt fit exactly in the space given. At frist, they overlap perfectly, but when you bring the orange one down and to the left, it leaves a small place because the overlapping sides are 3 on the orange and 2 on the yellow, leaving a space.

It's pretty simple, at least to me, but who knows, maybe Im wrong.

Okay heres what you do, put the orange into the green so theres that gap, then switch the red and blue.

Good gravy guys... come on. Of course you can see what they did, but nobody has said what the solution was. I think it's the width of the lines, them moving things around, not being what they seem. You will notice that the two upper rectangles have different slopes.
If something has one area one way you CANNOT rearrange them to be a smaller area. The areas of the 4 pieces must ALWAYS add up to ONE number, not 2 different ones depending on how they are arranged. I'm pretty sure he understood the problem, not asking what the problem was. If it was TRUE that these four pieces were different areas then math would be all screwed up.

Yes it will. Shapes of 1 square inch, 2 square inches, 3, and 4 will ALWAYS add up to 10. Always. It's like saying you can rearrange water in a bucket or something and make it take up less space. When something completely fills a given space, it completely fills it, and cannot be condensed further. The problem here is not in math but in an optical illusion. The borders are very thick and they are not TRUE triangles either.

The hypotenuse isn't straight on either of them. It goes in on the top one, and out on the bottom one.

Im pretty sure I just got served to the highest extent. Eh, oh well, Im not too good with math anyway. Good job explaining, and I didn't even notice the triangles on top having different slopes, only slightly, but different none the less.

I understood the question, I'm not retarded I'm wondering why two triangles that are 5x9 or whatever it is dont have the same area, but yes it looks like the hyp's are curved or different somehow.

I knew you understood the question, I was commenting on someone else's post. I really like puzzles like these, any more?
